Hey fellow quilters! I thought I was doing pretty good for a beginner then I went to the pictures section on the forum!!! WOW!!! I Have only done a few patchwork quilts. I cut 4 1/2" squares out and sewed them into simple strip patterns then basted it together by stitching every other row lenth and cross ways. Generally using a maxi lock multi colored thread in a zig zag pattern and well put a binding on the edges and called it a day! What is a great way to go with my next step? I would like to get a little more intricate and detailed I am finishing a quilt top now for a new born that I'm hoping they can use thru his toddler years. I've noticed stencils and such in stores but have never utilized one. Looking forward to your knowledge.

Check the tutorial links here for lots of great ideas. Read all the advice you see on here as you have time. Some of us do really simple items by choice and something a little harder once in a while. The disapearing 9 patch is a nice choice and so is a log cabin with 2" strips. Good luck and keep quilting. It is a life long love of mine.

I would find a pattern that appeals to you. I learned to quilt before Internet & picked up different techniques & tips from pattern instructions. Also, with the price of cotton going up, you can purchase the exact amount needed according to the directions.

The tutorials on here are excellent so you could start there plus there are numerous free pattern websites that you can look at and get an idea of what you want to try next. Mostly the stencils you see are for FMQ (free motion quilting) to use for quilting on your sandwiched top. That is a whole nother ball game.

Leah Day has a great website from beginner to experienced:

http://www.daystyledesigns.com/

I would go there and look throughout her website for some great ideas.

I think doing your next project with half square triangles would be a great way to get more involved in quilting. They're not hard to make and add a really nice design to you quilt. You can make all kinds of patterns with them if you use contrasting colors.
