I am new at quilting, and have posted a few photos of what I have done. For some reason I am not attracted to quilts that have form - I like things a little off and always with a splash of some bright color. I have been combining applique on many of the quilts. This week I have "mastered" nine-patch, flying geese and triangles using paper piecing. I cannot make 1/4 inch seams without a line to follow, even with the sewing foot. Is there anyone like me in the quilting world??? Don't have a computer near where I sew, so I can't watch and follow some of the video demonstrations

If this style is what makes you happy, then why change? I have tried some patterns that were not my style, but I always go back to what makes me happiest :D:D:D

I'm quilting a very simple quilt right now. It looked straight to me before I put it on the frame...was I wrong. So, yes, there are people just like you out in the world, and I'm one of them.

There's no 'do-over' on this quilt, either. I'm doing it for the experience using my pcquilter and hq16. What I'm learning most is what I don't know! But it's fun, and that's what counts.

i agree with you, i've never been drawn to the rows of blocks with sashing.

i say forge your own path and throw out all the rules.

You need to check out "Liberated Quilters". Google it. They aren't too worried about straight or 1/4 inch seams.

That's what quilting is all about - doing it your own way! Be creative! They are out there; you just need to look a little! Go for it! And we would love to see them here! That would be an inspiration to others who would like to try something a little different, but need a little 'push' to go ahead and do it! :thumbup:

You might like the "modern" quilting movement, there are a lot of relaxed, no-rules, asymmetrical, good-for-beginning-quilter blogs out there, with some great, easy tutorials. I know you don't have easy access to a computer, but some of the tutorials can be printed out. Check books out from your library, go to quilt shows, you may become inspired and create your own style! A great resource could be the modern quilt guild - it's sort of a grass-roots nationwide guild with branches in various locations. Check this website to see if there's one near you, and if there is, GO! You will likely find lots of kindred spirits there! :)
