    I made one for a picnic table cloth. I zigzagged pot holders together edge to edge. There was no bulk. It lasted many summers and was used as a pool blanket too. I bought the pot holders on sale 2 for a $1 at a store closing.

    i think maybe zig-zagging them together sounds like the way to go vs whip-stitching. You would eliminate the bulk, it'd be more secure and add interest. This could be cute especially for a picnic quilt for use on top of table or for sitting on.
