I need to wash them because of the chemicals on them so I put them in a mesh washing bag.
I've always done this. Hot water and hot dryer. If you don't have a mesh bag an old pillow case will do. throw in some color catchers and old white cotton towel.Originally Posted by quiltingcandy
I do. I wash them in the kitchen sink then toss them into the dryer. Minimal fray. If you're worried about ANY fray, then skip the dryer and hang them dry.

A big, cheap, plastic dishpan dedicated to fabric only will save a lot of time cleaning the sink (if yours looks like mine).

I wash them and don't find they fray all that much. It's easy to trim the frayed edges while ironing them. I love freshly washed and starched fabrics to work with.
Swish in kitchen sink or laundry tub with a few drops of laundry detergent. rinse well. I put mine in salad spinner then lay on kitchen counter overnight, but you could dry in dryer on gentle.

I zig zag the edges before washing in the machine. I've read that notching the edge on one end also works, but I haven't tried it. Some people pink, but my pinking shears don't work very well.
I always wash my fat quarters in my washing machine along with other lengths of fabric. The chemicals on fabric really bother my fingers. I keep a pair of scissors next to my washing machine and cut the strings (if any) before I put them in the dryer. PS: I always throw a color catcher in each wash of newly purchased fabric.

I wash mine in a mesh bag with a color catcher and have had no problems.
