    Is there any reason not to use this for lap-size quilts? I like it for wall hangings. I'm not great at machine quilting & this is easier to use.

    No reason, If you like it, go ahead and use it. There are no rules in quilting, just guidelines or suggestions...well, mainly opinions, and if yours is to use it, feel free to do it.
