Well I found out the hard way that my 1/4 inch foot that I purchased for my Brother machine is not a true 1/4 inch. I sewed three 2 1/2 strips together and then cut them into 2 1/2 blocks. After sewing them together and pressing it was supposed to measure 6 1/2 inches. I had a piece that was supposed to get sewn onto this that measured 6 1/2. Well guess what, it didnt fit. Not even close. I took out all the stitches and did it without the 1/4 inch foot and guess what.... it fit. You would think that when you buy a 1/4 inch foot it would work.

Each machines needle placement can be slightly off... I know another member with a Brother who was having the same problem...

As long as you use the same machine with the same foot, everything should match.

I thought so too. But the pattern had me put three 2 1/2 pieces together and then the separate piece was 6 1/2 to be sewn on that. So I would have to cut all the 6 1/2 pieces smaller and there are also triangles that go on as well that wouldnt match. So do I cut all the pieces smaller?

Can you try again moving your needle placement? I have 5 different needle placement locations.

What Brother do you have ?

Hi, I have yet to find a machine and their 1/4 inch foot with the guide sew a true 1/4 inch seam. I have had to file the single hole in the plastic part of the foot to make it more slotlike so that I could adjust the needle to get the correct size seam. Sometimes it has to do with the thread and fabric. Heavier fabric + thicker gauge thread will take up more space and offset the 1/4 inch seam. Pre-cut kits can be a nightmare. You must do a few practice seams to get the right size seam so that the add on pieces fit. Anne

I put a piece of masking tape on the bed of my machine 1/4" away from the needle. I do a couple of test pieces and make sure that it is accurate. You're golden after that.

I have a Brother machine also and have several 1/4" feet. The one that works for me is the foot with the guide on the right side. That foot makes a perfect scant 1/4" seam.

I hear your pain!!! I have a Janome Jem Platinum 760....when I turn the machine on its needle is set at 01 -- I have to reset it at 4 EVERY time when using the 1/4" pressure foot. Can't tell you how many times I've had to take out seams and resew because I forget. I've griped that you'd think if the foot is made for this machine, that they'd set them on a standard.
