#1 secret to good bindings

If your bindings don't work - irregular, mitres not even and accurate I would wager (if I did) that the problems are:
innacurate and inconsistent seam allowance from the beginning of the seam to the end.
It is easy for the seam allowance to veer out or in at the beginning and end. I believe (as I did) to lose control especially at the end. This can effect the way the mitre will fold.
If your mitres are wonky - rabbit ears, then fold the binding back to see if the seams remained true. If not, then rip out and restitch.
Whatever your seam size might be - as you come to the end of the seam toward the corner, then stop a couple stitches before you get to that point - be it 1/4" or 3/8" or whatever. Back stitch a couple stitches and take it out of the machine. Then start the next seam with needle just catches the edge of the fold. this will hole the layers until you can aralign the binding with the edge.
Also, when you fold the binding to make the mitre, then be sure the fold and all layers are 90 degrees.

Guess this is more than #1 but it works.

Good tip. Thanks for posting.

Holice, I've certainly had those problems. But another problem I have is the way I cut the quilt sandwich prior to machine-sewing the binding to the front. At the corners I either get too little or too much sandwich and I find it very hard to be accurate along the length and still get a 90% angle.

Do you have any advice for cutting the sandwich at the corners so they aren't either too empty or too stuffed to be pointy? Do you cut the sandwich layers all equal or layer them each a different width?

Thanks for the words of quilting wisdom!

I have to try this. You may have helped my wonky coners! Thanks

I trim the quilt before sewing the binding.
Then I will clip just a fraction on the corner after applying the binding. Just the tip and not too deep an angle. This takes a bit of the bulk out.
If there appears to be excess batting in the corner, then fold the top back and shave a bit of the batting
If you trim too much of the corner, then there is a chance you might cut into the folded batting..

Thanks for the hints! I have it printed out and inserted in my "hints" book!

Sounds like very good advice.

I found this little gadget very handy when I'm sewing binding on my quilts. Takes the guesswork out for stopping at each corner. If anyone has problems with their miters they should get one. I try to avoid a lot of gadgets but this one I like and would highly recommend. (No affiliation with the maker or anything).
