Hi, welcome to the board!
Sounds like a math question... show your work. If you use 90 X 108 for your queen quilt size, and you want the entire top to be bali strips, then you would need 90 X 108 = 9720 square inches of pieced fabric for the top. A bali pop has 40 2.5" strips. Assume that you get 40 inches of fabric after you cut the selvedges. Also, for a 1600 quilt, you normally join the strips on the diagonal, so you are going to lose 2.5" per strip which leaves you with 37.5". The strips are 2.5" wide, vut you would lose .5" in seams. So each strip will give you 37.5 X 2 = 75 square inches. 40 strips in a pack gives you 75 X 40 = 3000 square inches. 9720/3000 = 3.25 so you would need 4 packages, or go with 3 and add yardage for borders. One problem that you are going to have to solve is that you keep cutting the long (in your case really really long) strip in half, then half again etc. I'm not sure that doing this in one big piece will give you the proportion that you want for your quilt. It works for a single piece of 1600 inches, but may not work for your length. In other words, it might wind up too long and narrow, or too short but really wide. What I would do is join a bunch of strips and cut them at 92" lengths and sew those together until you get 108" in length then square it up. Curious to see what others will add. |
