Turning twenty-?

QuiltnNan 10-15-2012 01:12 PM

hunter's star is a great two color quilt

NikkiLu 10-15-2012 01:23 PM

Great question as my DD has requested a black and white quilt - I don't think that she means a solid black and a solid white though. Are your fat quarters prints of black and white?

LadyElisabeth 10-15-2012 01:28 PM

Any 2 color block should be striking in black and white.

Disappearing nine patch??????????

donac 10-15-2012 02:46 PM

I just finished the top to a D9P in black white and threw in the color green to add something. The corners were in light grean or white, the center was green and the other 4 squares were black. I came out stunning. I am not a black and white person but I loved it.

You are so right.......I just saw an Ohio Star that was done in two colors, red & white. It was so striking!

3-6-9 quilt, I just did one in black and white for my niece for Christmas

I'm thinking of getting black and white and some red and doing a quilt with Northern Star blocks. Or maybe pinwheels

DOTTYMO 10-16-2012 03:39 AM

Log cabin with a red fire in middle very traditional.

JNCT14 10-16-2012 04:42 AM

Thinking Outside the Block log cabin is awesome for black and whites with a third color thrown in. Or the 10 minute block, again with a third color.

How about doing a "search" on this board for black and white. Many show up. Also, add red or green with the black and white search. I have a few book marked.

Ditto. My son requested the exact same thing--but with the majority of it being blacks. I am anxious to finish reading this thread and hopefully some will give us some great suggestions.

GrannieAnnie 10-16-2012 07:00 AM

If you don't want to get away from the black and white, what about a good deep gray for an additional color--------------tone on tone if you could find it.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-16-2012 07:10 AM

This is just a basic rail fence out of all kinds of black and white prints with random bright color triangles appliqued on. If she is up for a bit of color, this might be fun.

I saw a string quilt that used black and white and it was beautiful!!!

Valerie Scherr 10-16-2012 09:47 AM

the fat quarters I purchased are printed half black on white other half white on black thanks for the great suggestions so far.

x's and o's....it's on the missourie star quilt site

I did a turning twenty from one of her later books. I used all greys with just one red block, for my DGS. I love the way it turned out. I have been collecting black/whites too. Don't know yet what I will do with them. Am thinking of adding something out of the box (for me), purple, orange, or green for just a touch of color.

jahaper 10-17-2012 03:45 AM

I made a black & white winding ways quilt and loved how it turned out.

kyquiltlover1942 10-17-2012 03:51 AM

I can tell you what NOT to do. I just made a crazy black and white, and a dash of red. No one except me likes it. It did get a honorable mention in a quilt show, and the critque complimented me on the choice of fabrics. It was also ripped apart by a gentleman at the state fair, saying it was the uglist quilt he had ever seen. Just saying. It has 64 different black and white and 11 red.

lclang 10-17-2012 04:52 AM

Ten minute blocks work up beautifully with red centers!

I made for someone in the Boomeang 8 Sapphires group a black and white block with a bit of green. Bento box pattern. I think it is very nice and going to make a quilt for my daughter using the same colours. It is so fast to sew up. Just take a look on the web for the pattern and lots of pictures:)

Every time I think about a black and white quilt, I want to find a small piece of red, or green to place unobtrusively into the pattern...If you look closely, this fabric has reddish pinks...Somehow it seems to relieve the eye. So, I'm wondering if you have thought of that small addition....one fat quarter of another color tucked here and there as a flange or added seam in a block?

Pete 10-17-2012 06:07 AM

If they are all different - do a Sudoku quilt. I made a lap quilt for my niece-- one of the fat quarters had a little pink in it so I used some pink as an inner border and then black as the outside. On the back I used the leftover fat quarters as they were and just had big blocks using black rick rack to hide the seams --- she loved it!

cherrio 10-17-2012 06:25 AM

Raggiemom,

love this! I will be copying this idea. thank you for sharing!

Handcraftsbyjen 10-17-2012 06:27 AM

Show Me Your Fat Quarters And I'll Show You Mine by Grizzly Gulch. Then add a pop of color around the three focus blocks and for the outer border.

plugger 10-17-2012 06:34 AM

eleanor burns fabric frenzy is really easy and comes out looking difficult
makes a beautiful quilt

wannaquilt1 10-17-2012 06:36 AM

i've always wanted to make the yellow brick road quilt

RedGarnet222 10-17-2012 06:58 AM

Use the black and white as backgrounds and machine applique your maple leaves in fall colors on it. That would be amazing to see finished.

Valerie Scherr 10-17-2012 09:25 AM

wow love all the suggestion but I like Pink Lady I found some nice yellow and think I may try a block and see how it looks.

I am planning one of these for my daughter who is a black & white decorator... I'm going to have her pick out the center fabric (she has green accents in her bedroom and red in her living area) and then use my black & white stash for the rest. I've loved every D9P I've seen using black & white with a spot of something else.

irishrose 10-17-2012 10:09 AM

My GD made a Square in a Square with different B/W prints and a different color of Moda Marble Swirls in the center each block. It turned out great for a first quilt - or for any quilt.

PokerDiva 10-17-2012 11:46 AM

I am doing a black and white Dresden Plate on a Berry background.

matraina 10-17-2012 12:05 PM

The Turning Twenty books are great and you use 20 fat quarters for them. I made a black and white quilt out of half square triangles. No pattern necessary. All different prints. I hope you meant your quarters were different patterns and not solid.

matraina 10-17-2012 12:13 PM

I forgot to mention that I love the quilt that raggiemom showed. It's beautiful.

bjhumes 10-17-2012 12:15 PM

Love this one you made! I saw free pattern for black/white at Walmart...if I had grabbed it I would copy/email to you!

joy 10-17-2012 01:03 PM

Have made three black and white quilts... with just a small amount of red here and there..... not much red... it just gives the quilts a lift...

KyKaren1949 10-17-2012 03:56 PM

What about adding a little red and doing a log cabin???
