I am having trouble figuring this out....I would much rather have a template that is 60* than turning my long ruler every which way but the right way to get this to work out for me...would anyone have any tips to help me figure this out !!

If you have a ruler with that correct line, it's really not hard. The first cut, to achieve the angle, is the hardest, & then you can just go from there. Try it on a scrap piece first, & play a bit!

Are you cutting diamonds or triangles? Either way, cut your strips first then just cut the angles to make diamonds. If you need triangles cut the strips, diamonds, then just cut them in half.

I use a special ruler, a "super 60 clearview triangle". I love it.

Put some blue painter's tape to mark the 60 lines on your ruler.

That would make an octagon, not a hexagon.

There are free hexagon graph papers online if you want to make your own template, e.g. at

http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/hexagonal/

Set it to the size you want, download the file and print off.
