What do you all think of the 80% Cotton, 20% Poly batting? I picked some up at Walmart to do a sofa throw, but would like to hear your opinions on it before I sandwich the quilt.

I like 80/20 batting. I use Hobbs and really like it. Try it to see if you like it. If not then do not use again. I get Hobbs queen size batting at Hobby Lobby for 40% off of $17 which will probably make it about the price of walmart's.

I have used Hobbs 80/20 and also Dream Blend, which is 80/20 or 75/25, can't remember. I loved both and they seem to wash well. I know one of the groups I made quilts for suggested that batting, not sure if it was QOV or another group. I usually used W&N or one of these 2 unless I am doing really lightweight quilts, then I use poly.

read the package, some of the 80/20 blend batts at walmart have to be quilted every 2" which means a very heavily quilted quilt. they are ok for hand quilting, very soft, needle nicely. if that is what you are going for. if you want a quilt to toss around, wash every now & then and Use...you may want a batt that only needs to be quilted every 4-6" or even up to 10". it is very important to follow the recommendations for density of quilting. if you have a batt that says quilt every 2" and you only do every 6"-8" when it gets washed it will ball up inside the spaces without quilting and you will have a lumpy quilt.

I did notice that it requires quilting every 2-4 inches and will be sure I don't leave any area more than 4 inches unquilted so that it will be durable enough to wash repeatedly.

I see that the Hobbs 80-20 says quilting "can be up to 3½" apart", so about the same...

I have some but haven't tried it yet.

I'm quilting with it now. It's so soft, the quilt will have to end up cuddly! The washing will be the test - will let you know.

I love, love 80 - 20. I have found that it is easy to manage and easy to quilt. It has a wonderful 'hand' if you want a warmer quilt. (Don't know how to express that.) I have used it for 2 quilts and am going to get another one when it is on sale.

I use a 80/20 very often, the Hobbs, Legacy and at the moment the Luna brand. They are all wonderful for hand quilting (the manufacturer suggests to quilt max. 4" apart) and they are really cuddly, especially after washing the finished quilt. I do not prewash them because I like the antique look but normally you can - check the instructions on the bag. The quilt drapes very nicely and isn't stiff - even when you quilt it very densely.

I use the Hobbs 80/20 to hand quilt as a matter of course but much prefer the Quilter's Dream Blend 70/30 for machine quilting. You can go up to 12" apart but even close quilted, it stays soft - unlike the W and N which can get a bit stiff IMO.
