I have just bought a 9 degrees ruler and pattern for the table runner but cannot make sense of it. Can anyone help by showing how the cuts are made. I have sewed all my eight fabrics together in the necessary strip sizes but cannot understand how to cut them. Do I cut both sides of ruler to get my wedges or how when I turn it round do I get the second set. I probably am very stupid to be asking this question but would love to master this project. Many thanks in advance.

If I understand your question, yes you cut both sides of the wedge ruler to get each wedge. Start with the longest wedge and then each wedge is 3/4" shorter. You have to cut wedges from each side of your strip sets. I got as many wedges as I could from each and I had a little extra fabric.

Cut both side of the wedge ruler and the top of the ruler.
I cut all of the first set moving on to the second set of strips. Each cut is 3/4 of in inch shorter than the last. I then use the "left overs" and cut the rest of the small wedges. Hope this helps. PM if you need more help. The hardest part is the cutting. The sewing is easy cause nothing has to "line" up. I used a 10" wedge and left the very longest off. You may need to be a little flexible when you put it together. |
I do it a little different than erstan947, because I cut as many as I can from the first strip before I move on to the second. There are always more than one way to do things.

When I cut the first wedges across the first two stratas (this is two sets of fabrics face up, one dark up the other dark down)am I supposed to turn the board round to cut in between them again. This is the bit I cannot get. I hope this
makes sense to you great people who have replied so quickly. PS I have only sewed two stratas so far until I see if I can follow this. How many wedges should I get from the first two. I really must sound dumb but I have read this pattern over and it just hasn't clicked. |
According to the directions in the pattern you just cut along one side first to get the wedges listed. Then you do the next two stratas to get the wedges listed. Then they say to go back and use the scraps to finish cutting. I do mine different and I cut both sides of the first two stratas before I go on to the next two. You will just have to practice and see what works for you. I used old fat quarters I had around the house before I used my good fabrics so if it messed up I wouldn't be out any money.

Sadiemae thanks a million. I have just been using old fabric as well to practise on so will go on and do the other two stratas and cut them to see if I can get the number of wedges required. Don't know what I'd do without this board.

I just cannot believe it but I mastered the wedge ruler pattern. Kept cutting and cutting all the sizes from my trial stratas and woooooooo was able to put them together perfectly. Its true the cutting is the hardest but once I got them all sorted into lights and darks in piles I flew through the sewing. Now I want to do some Christmas ones and hopefully if my DD will show me how to put some pictures on I will be able to do so. Thank you so much again for all the help otherwise this ruler would have been a waste of money.

Good for you. I've not used that ruler. Hope to see your pics.

Just my trial one and colours were just odd pieces. Have picked fabric from stash to start cutting a Christmas one. Babysit my 19 month grandson each day so can't wait till weekend to get time to do a proper one. Will do best to get photos on asap.

It is a wonderful tablerunner, and I think the most difficult part for me is choosing colors. I love it!!!

I am trying this pattern and what I can't figure out is do I lay one strata directly on top of the other one then cut so I have 2 wedges same size? I am so confused
|
I have the strip sets sewn but went totally blank on the cutting. I wish someone would make a how to cut video of this.
