I completed the top of a Mardi Gras table runner. What color thread would you use to quilt it? The backing is purple. Should I use purple as the bottom thread?

I try and use threads that will work on the top and bottom. I do not like to have to keep fiddling with the tension.
There are beautiful varigateds that would be pretty on this runner :D:D:D

What quilting are you going to do - that will help decide on your thread colour. Regarding the backing - I usually try to match my thread to the backing colour, although I make sure it is the same make of thread as the top.

I will sid since at this time that is all I know how to do! Just a beginner!

Monstookie 02-05-2011 03:11 PM

I would use purple for the back and then depending on the type of quilting I wold change the color of the tope thread to match the section I am working on. But I am not an expert.

In that case why not use invisible thread or if you don't like using it I'd go for a match on the design - eg yellow for those bits and a purple for the rest. Your runner looks lovely - love your colours.

Stitchnripper 02-05-2011 03:19 PM

I agree with Amma - about the variegated thread. I use this a lot and like the results.

fireworkslover 02-05-2011 04:04 PM

Either purple or yellow, perhaps green in the green blocks or go with a variegated. You might not be able to find a variegated with purple and yellow in it tho. Check out Superior Threads, I know they have lots of variegated threads in their King Tut line.

I second that.

I'd go with sparkly since gaudy doesn't really work here :)

hobo2000 02-05-2011 04:44 PM

Oh gold metallic would be in keeping with the Mardi Gra theme.

tdgiffin 02-05-2011 04:47 PM

Go for it and use shiny gold! Add some richness to go with your purple!

sewingsuz 02-05-2011 04:48 PM

That is so pretty!

That's beautiful. Love the colors.

franie 02-05-2011 07:43 PM

Very pretty! Gold would be my choice too.

LAB55 02-05-2011 08:01 PM

Your table runner is beautiful !!

grammyp 02-05-2011 08:06 PM

Gold metallic, absolutely. That is beautiful.

Dina 02-05-2011 08:10 PM

I am too new to quilting to really have an opinion, but your table runner is beautiful!

Edie 02-06-2011 04:43 AM

I would use a purple variegated or invisible. The runner is just gorgeous! And the purple is the most important representing Lent. Edie

Yep!! That would work. Bright and beautiful topper.

pamesue 02-06-2011 06:19 AM

I like the idea of shiny gold

they i would use purple for the whole thing...or course i'm prejudiced, because purple is my favorite color...

it is a beautiful runner!

katlady 02-06-2011 06:37 AM

Use purple on the back (bobbin) & yellow on the top.

memepat 02-06-2011 06:40 AM

To keep the mardi gras theme - what about purple?

DJ 02-06-2011 06:43 AM

Beautiful runner!

quilt3311 02-06-2011 07:07 AM

I think I would try for a multi color thread, could be in bobbin also to make it easier with tension.

sidmona 02-06-2011 07:09 AM

Purple in the bobbin, gold or variegated on the top.

QuiltingMia 02-06-2011 07:30 AM

Thanks for all the input. I will post the finished product when it is complete. :)

jolo 02-06-2011 07:55 AM

check out the varigated quilting threads. I think I have seen one with all thoses colors. it quilt up beautifully.

lillybeck 02-06-2011 10:18 AM

Since you are doing SID then just use the purple.

Marvel 02-06-2011 10:58 AM

I think a gold would be pretty. Have you thought of taking some of the scraps and experiment with different threads? By the way, I dearly love how your runner turned out. Marvel

roseee 02-06-2011 11:19 AM

It is beautiful. I agree with the purple on bottom and metallic gold on top.

I like using the varigated threads becasue they tend to bring all the colors together and look so pretty on the backing. Good Luck!

I would use varigated thread.

p38flygirl 02-06-2011 03:52 PM

I would use purple for the back and a varigated for the top...Or use varigated for both sides..

I agree.....for me it works smoothly using the same thread top and bottom and a varigated would look great.

costumegirl 02-06-2011 04:40 PM

Cute runner!! I think all of the suggestions would work! Have fun!!

Holice 02-06-2011 04:51 PM

i would quilt 1/4" out from the seam. Would give better definitation. If you are having difficulty with bottom thread showing on top, I would use same thread on the bottom. Then there would be a nice quilting pattern on the back.
