Do any of you have advise for sewing a toddler's blanket from regular cotton fabric?. I do not know what to use for filling and how to finish. All that I have is a piece of fabric that I would like to make into a child's blanket.

You can use batting or flannel for the filling. It all depends on how heavy you want it to be. There are no quilt police so you can do anything your heart desires. You can quilt it when you get it sandwiched together or you could tie it. There is no right or wrong when it comes to quilts.

I made 2 toddler quilts. The first with flannel as the center layer and then I quilted it. The second, with a polyester batting and then I tied it. Anything goes.

When I made mine for the grands they loved the soft feel of flannel for the backing. I used a cotton batting and quilted it tightly so the batting wouldn't bunch with washing. Those quilts are washed more frequently, usually, so the quilting needs to be a little closer than with an adult quilt. At least that's what I found with my grands at the toddler age. They wanted to drag them with them everywhere. :-)

My best advice on any kids' quilt is NOT to put a binding on it. From personal experience, my oldest (now 27) almost hung himself off a bunk bed with a loose binding on a blanket I'd made him. Since then, I've rarely done a binding on any quilt. That was a many gray hair causing incident :)

Safety issues aside, I think a toddler blanket should be very interesting. They can be hard to get to nap, so an I Spy quilt can keep them busy til their eyes get heavy.

Quilt Magazine has a learning to quilt project in every issue - these are extremely simple quilts, and if you make yours up with colorful kids fabrics, I'm sure it will be a big hit!
