Am I using too much spray starch???....
I am piecing my neck ties to make a crazy quilt and sometimes when I'm pressing my seams after stitching I get a white, flaky residue on my fabric immediately after I iron. Am I using too much starch??? Or, what causes this flaky residue? Thanks!

Try letting your fabric absorb the starch for a bit before pressing.

Spray piece, allow to sit a while, spray another one, let it sit, spray another, go back to first. See if that help.

I agree with the earlier posters. Also, your iron might be a tad too hot.

What everyone else said. Sounds like the spray starch is still sitting on top of the fabric when you iron. It needs time to be absorbed into the fabric; then you won't get the flaking.

or try spraying the starch on the back of the tie

I have the same problem, these tips are helpful!

Having been addicted to using starch in quilting for many many years. The only problems I see when others use starch is not allowing the starch to saturate into the fibers. If you get flaking .. its the tell tale sign you have not let it absorb into the fibers. I have on occasion double starched and for those projects that I need stand on its own stiff , I let the starch dry completely before ironing.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. You can surely tell I don't do alot of ironing, right??? LOL I tend to get a little impatient when I work on my projects. I did let the starch absorb into the fabrics and this is working a whole lot better. Thanks again. I'm finished my squares and I'm about to start the embellishements on my crazy quilt. Wow! This will be my first project like this.....Where to start??? LOL Wish me luck!
