I'm attempting my first quilt, a baby size rag made with flannel. I'm going crazy trying to match up the squares on the front and the back and not repeat a square next to each other.

I've noticed that some rag quilts shown on here have some squares of the same design next to each other. It would be so much easier if it didn't matter.

I always do it random. I think it looks more comfy that way! Really, it is just a personal preference.

Your quilt your way it doesn't matter if you want it that way :) !!!

I think the easiest way to do that would be to either use the same fabric on the back as the front, or for each square of one fabric, a different one, but use the same for each one that has the same on the front...clear as mud? lol

Do it your way. Baby won't care.

Try numbering your blocks, front and back. allow repeats of blocks in row 1 when you get to row 3, repeat of blocks in row 2 when you get to row 4, etc.

I think this will solve your problem, but I can't be sure as I've never made a rag quilt!

I use all the same fabric on the back :wink: makes matching there so much easier :thumbup:

had the same issue - but when all done didn't seem to matter - just scrappy looking - no matter how hard I tried to vary the blocks a couple ended up next to each other!

I usually lay them out on a flat surface before I start sewing. Then I can move them around a little if I need to. Then I pick the rows up, stack them (1st block on the left is the top of the stack), number the rows, and set them aside. But that's just me I've also done one that had like blocks in a diagonal and one that was a trip around the world layout. :-D
