OK - i have the book, i have the fabric, however i don't have a 60 degree triangle ruler. I have been to two quilt shops, neither have the clearview triangle ruler that the author recommends, both shop owners offered to order one for me, but i can do that myself. Is it necessary to use this particular ruler to make these blocks?

Technically not - you can use the 60° line on your regular ruler but it's faster and less of a faff with the triangle so I got one myself. And I think, if you're anything like me, your first OBW won't be your last so it's worth the investment. :D
