Annette,
You didn't say how large you wanted your finished block but the answer is always the same. If want your finished block to be 9" for example: divide that size by 3 that gives you the size of each square within your 9patch. Then add 1/2" for seam allowances. That is 1/4" on each side. So a 9" nine patch will take strips of 3 1/2" fabric to complete. I'm assuming here that you plan to strip piece your project. Hope I answered your question. |
Welcome to quilting, Annette.
I recommend THE best quilting book I've ever had my hands on. It's "101 Fabulous Rotary-Cut Quilts". Not only does it show you quilts already made .. with gorgeous colors ... but gives you step-by-step instructions on how to cut fabric and put them together. Bought it off Amazon.com for $20 or so. Invest in a good self-healing mat, rotary cutter and a couple good see-thru rulers. They'll be your best friends. Have fun !! |
Eleanor Burns has a good chapter on 9 patches in Still Stripping after all these years. A common size is to cut 2.5 inch strips of dark and light fabric. That should trim out to a 6 inch block. 3.5 inch strips would come out to about a 9 inch block. The internet has a lot of information for putting them together.
I'm also from OKC (although currently exiled to Virginia). Are you going to go to the Winter Quilt show this weekend at the Cox Convention Center? Eleanor Burns is supposed to be there so I am sure you could track down her book. The weather is supposed to be yucky, unfortunately. Good luck! |
Hi there is that white dog a Samoyed? I have 3. Just interested.

Yes, Sondra, I also have three. The picture is a recent one of Evelyn (2 in March). We also have Sapphire (13) and Jezebel (6). They are my quilting buddies and nest fillers. There are a few more pictures in my phto album in the profile. E and J were bred in Virgnia but Sapphire is from Oklahoma. You?

My Sams are all rescues from Play It Again Sams. Sasha is my old girl, 10, Sampson, 6 and Bindi Su 3. We had a former Sam, Fox, who died at 13 and he and Sampson were great buddies. When Fox died Sampson grieved so much we adopted Sasha. Well, she hated Sampson and would have nothing to do with him--her mate was adopted prior to our adopting her and she has NEVER gotten over that loss. Consequently, it was suggested that I foster this 13 week old puppy to help Sampson. Well, needless to say, it has been almost 4 years and we still have the puppy, Bindi Su. She and Sampson play a lot. However, Sampson has severe hip dysplasia on both hips and both legs have tendon issues. He has had a tendenotomy on the right front leg and limps a lot and cannot walk to far or run, etc. He was abused badly by his former owner (or whatever you might call them). I love them but they don't enjoy my quilting at all--they want me to stop and play and pay attention to them--stop with the sewing stuff. I love them, but I don't like all the hair. Do you do your own grooming? I try but I have just found out I am allergic to dogs! Not that I will ever get rid of any of them. I also have 3 cats, who are also rescues and currently am feeding a feral cat outside. Just one of those people with a sucker sign on their door. I love it.
