If I could only own ONE quilting book, it would the "Quilters Complete Guide" by Fons and Porter.

My recommendation would be

"Your First Quilt Book (or it should be!)" by Carol Doak

Lots and lots of information and a few patterns for your first efforts. I still refer to this book for information.

I also own the "Quilter's Complete Guide" mentioned by Cathe. It's also very good.

My mother bought me the book, "Still Stripping After 25 Years", by Eleanor Burns which is very easy to follow as there are photos that show you how to piece your fabrics together. Also there are also alot of templates that go along with the books by Eleanor Burns that make them easy to follow.

Hope this helps,

"The Idiots Guide to Quilting". I borrowed it from the library when I started quilting and it helped me to learn the basics very quickly because the information is very easy to understand. It has a lot of information, tips, patterns (mostly easy ones), little quilting tidbits, and little warnings to help keep you away from a hair pulling situation. I think its also has a couple of pages with information on bed and quilt sizes and how to choose fabric for you to rip out and hang up on a wall so you can look it up without paging through the book.

besides books, I also record the various quilting shows that are usually on the educational channels.

I'm not sure which one of the books by Eleanor Burns I have that I also have each show recorded that goes along with the book, so I have both the book and show for help if needed

Hello all, I (also) am new to quiltiong, and have borrowed the book, titled
Quilting for Idiots -not implying anyone is an idiot ;-),
and this has helped me very much! This book has lots of pictures,
which is very helpful, especially when first starting out.
Good luck!

The Fons and Porter book, Quilter's complete guide, is my bible in the sewing room. If you can't get the copy with the spiral binding, take the soft cover book to Office Max or some such place. Back in the copy department they have a machine to cut the back of binding and insert a spiral binding. It is well worth the $5 or less to have this done. I also take pattern books to have this done, so they will open flat.
