Any recommendations for an iron?
 

Hi everyone. My iron stopped working today and I need to get one this weekend. I'm looking for recommendations on which irons are best for quilters. Thanks so much.

Do you want steam? Sometimes I don't want steam, and I don;t want those little circles from a steam iron, even when its dry, especially for applique. I just ordered a dry iron from Vermont's Country Store for $ 29.00, $5.00 shipping.

I've never had any luck with Rowanta...I've had 3 and they never lasted A year.

You will get a bunch of answers to this one. I have had the expensive ones and the el cheapo ones. Cheap was best for me. if I could find one without the auto shut off (I'm a big girl and can remember to shut it off) I'm a happy camper. Some peeps put their iron and a lamp on same surge protector and when they turn it on its all on. So that way the lamp on, you know your iron is on

I had a Rowenta overheat on me last November, and it burned part of a quilt block I was working on - it was about 1 1/2 years old. I've had better luck with the inexpensive ones, Sunbeam and Black & Decker.

I so agree with justquilting I too had 3 rowantas didn't last more then a year thougt is was my water I don't have a water softer system and have very extreme hard water pia for cleaning bathroom but any way i get the cheapos the fancy irons didn't make me a better quilter anyway lol

just not a Rowenta. many have caught fire. had mine for yrs and it finally blew out my power cord.
i now have a cheap Shark. works fine.

I just ordered one from Kohl's called a Delonghi. It was on sale for $59.99 and I had a coupon for 15% off, so it brought it down to $51.00. I have never had one, but they got good reviews. I have had 4 rowenta's and you would have thought I would learn. They have all leaked and spit on my fabric and clothes. Once they have started spitting, they are done. Good luck. There are sew many to pick from!

Go with the cheap ones. I've had a sunbeam for over a year & only paid $20.00 or it...if it blows up tomorrow I'll get another.

I have one Rowenta for regular ironing but too heavy for everyday quilting. The quilting rowenta did start spitting water so I only use it without steam. I tried switching to a better iron and for my birthday I asked for the Obiso. After 3 days it started to malfunction and decided to return it. It was the type of iron you leave laying flat and it springs down when you touch it. and back up when you let go. Soon it started not to want to go up. Was too affraid of catching fire. hmmmmmm.... back to the manufacture it was sent.

I perfer the cheap ones!!!! Have a black and decker classic and has been a good iron have had it for several years.

I've had several Rowentas. After the last one bit the dust, I bought a cheap one at KMart for $9.00. Still going strong a year later. I also like to, on occasion, spritz water on my fabric before ironing it, especially for stubborn wrinkles.

I want an old vintage iron, I keep looking. It is out there somewhere.

We have had so many discussions on irons recently. Have you tried using the search function for lots more opinions? I have a Black and Decker Digital Advantage which replaced my leaky Rowenta.

I just had to replace my iron. Went with the classic El Cheapo, Black and Decker this time. I've had two Rowentas that leaked and I read so many bad reviews on the Olisos that I decided I'd rather just spend $20 and if I have to replace it in a year, I'm only out $20. I am hard on irons!

Well my Rowenta just came back from being repaired today via UPS. I bought it last April and in 6 months it needed a new pump and new water tank. It is the blue 8090 that they sell at JoAnns. I love it when it works, but it really tweaked me off that it needed a repair so quickly. Especially it said Made in Germany. I also had several steam generators (made in China) that I bought from Bed Bath & Beyond. The final straw was when the last one blew and spewed 32 ounces of water after 73 days. It was leaking water through the on/off switch. I had to pull it from the outlet. It went back and then I got the 8090. This is my last Rowenta. I didn't have to pay, but the repair would have been more than I paid for the iron both ways. If it fails again, not going back, going straight to the trash.

My friend bought the yellow Oliso and sent that back 3 times and then got her money back. The feet failed like crazy and burned up her ironing board.

Friends with Reliables haven't complained yet, but the price. Ouch!

When my Rowenta was in the shop I got a Black & Decker Digital Advantage from BB&B well that is a little workhorse, but has a 15 minute auto shut off. It beeps at you and while I can deal with it now, it did annoy me a bit at first. http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-D.../dp/B0006ZUHR0

I have a Reliable that I bought from my local sew-vac store. EXCELLENT! Gets hot with loads of steam if you want it. Heavy but irons like no other. I've had every brand but this one outshines them all. Was pricey ($170) but worth it if you like really flat seams. Also can be set to not turn off automatically.
