My mom gave me her Designer I.. she did not quilt
Anyway.. I am trying to fmq (first time on it) and the tread is looping in the back .. or it is skipping stitches
This is what I have done
put on R foot (that is the only one I have)
drop feed dogs
selected V menu.. stitch 1 stitch length is 0
advisor is on heavy woven (someonelse suggested that)
I have same thread on top and bobbin (connecting threads and it sews wonderfully on machine)
new needle 90/14 says quilting on package
I did slow down the speed by 2 (also a suggestion of someone else)

Any more ideas ???

No ideas, but I just bought a used Designer too and will watch for answers as I've only been sewing on her and she is wonderful for that!!!!!

You have selected the correct stitch. Did you try selecting the medium woven in the advisor? That will put a bit more tension on the top thread. Are the loops everywhere or just on curves? If they are everywhere, then tighten your top tension using the adjust screen. If they are just on the curves, you need to slow down your hand movement on the curves. I used my Designer I to do a lot of FMQ, but I invested in the spring foot. Might want to look into that. There is an additional setting for this foot.

Have you clicked on the menue and selected the
Free motion button? That is all I do when I fmq on
my Viking Designer I. Lower the feed dogs and select
the FMQ button on the menue screen. Only two things
to doe and then go for it!!!

Yes, go to the menu, scroll down and select FREE MOTION QUILTING!!! The open toe spring foot works wonders!!

Ok.. To Answer all your questions.. Well first let me say.. my mom could not find the book.. so I have been looking on the internet for answers that I need for different things..

Did you try selecting the medium woven in the advisor?
No.. but I will

Are the loops everywhere or just on curves?
seem to be mainly on the curves so I will try this

Ok.. I dont recall seeing a Free motion selection... Can you tell me exactly where it is ??

Use stitch V then push set and scroll down to get to free motion and for quilt sandwich with warm and natural the medium setting is correct. You don't need to use a "spring foot" for the D1, it's just lots easier and smoother with the open toe stippling foot. I was using the spring foot for a while until I found this new foot and it's wonderful and so much smoother. The tension is auto set with these settings. The D1 does a beautiful FMQ.
