Any Suggestions!
 

I have been given the pleasure of being picked to do a memory
quilt for a little guy of 9 months that died of a terrible disease.
I had made a quilt for him when he was born, I felt so bad for
his family, I said two things i can do, one is pray and one is
make him a quilt to give him hugs. Well, they appreciated
the quilt so much, they want me to take his clothes (5 bags)
each bag would go to a certain family member with it's theme.
I am going to start this weekend, it is so hard to cut those little
clothes. But I figure I would do a small nine patch, using the
center one as maybe the jersey material and around it cotton,
and spray starch it, and use the "X Block" ruller to make
it look like a patchwork quilt. I do have a little of the backing
of the original quilt I will put a block of the material into it.
I was going to use the flannel receiving blankets for the backing.
Should I tied them, or should I try and get them machine quilted?
This is a big undertaking, but I do realize she has no idea the
work involved, but that is okay. It is for a great cause. i am not
making them big maybe between a crib and throw size. I kept
thinking what would people actually do with them??? Any comments
or suggestions?? Thanks for help.

Bless your heart. You are doing a wonderful thing. I would think the quilts will be keepsakes and not be used so tying them should be OK. If you think that they are going to be hung on a wall, you might want to tie them a bit closer together so they don't sag over time.

Wow! what an endeavor. There have been many threads that have shown quilts made using baby clothes, one in particular was striking. I will try to find it. You are a special person to do this!

Somewhere on the board is also a thread about printing photos onto fabric. Maybe the quilt could have a center block with the child's photo on it. Very sad story, and kudos to you for helping this family.

You are an awesome friend. I would print transfer a picture of him on each quilt. Nothing large, like a label A crib size quilt would be appropriate for some, a wall hanging for others. Simple blocks or large 9 patch, or even, embroider/zigzag (whatever your machine can do) one of his garments (like a tiny onesy or a pair of little overalls, or a sleeper) onto a large square as a focal point. Just some suggestions. I sew good thoughts and wishes into my quilts (my frame of mind while I work on a project).

If you can't bring yourself to cut the baby's clothes, here is a link to a blog of a quilter who made one without cutting up the baby's clothes. It was very cute and I am sure it would mean so much to the parents done this way.
