Anyone else fallen in love with Laurel Burch?

I am in awe of this womans talent. So sorry to hear of her passing. I love her fabrics. :0)
For Xmas hubby gave me her Mythical Horses embroidery designs, can't wait to stitch them out.
I have been researching her quilting books, I had no idea she had written so many reading books as well.
I have come across several, Kindred Creatures, Laurel Burch Legends, and Laurel Burch Christmas.
Also from comments from others that have purchased her quilt books, it seems used books don't have the patterns included. Could these quilts even be made without the patterns?
My question is-has anyone made quilts from any of Laurel Burch quilt books?
I'm wondering if they are worth the cost? Descriptions tend toward complicated quilts with painting,
embellishments, etc. As much as I love her whimsical creatures I don't want to buy a quilt book and not
make any of the quilts. Would appreciate any comments from other Laurel Burch fans.
Can't wait to see her new line of fabrics coming out in February by Clothworks, Butterflies!

ptquilts 12-30-2011 10:28 AM

is she the one with the cat angels? I love those.

patmas57 12-30-2011 10:35 AM

I bought the Kindred Creatures book so many years ago I can't remember when, but I know it was back when I hadn't ever planned on quilting! (I've only started quilting since last year, although I started accumulating quilting stuff the year before.) I, too, feel that the designs are very complicated and don't really want to deal with all of the embellishments, but I like to take the book out now and then and just look through. Last time I did, just a couple of weeks ago as a matter of fact, I thought that maybe I'd at least use a fabric paint (tube kind, like old TriChem liquid embroidery) to fill in the details. But I love, love, love, her stuff. I do want to get some of her fabrics sometime, and I'm happy to see that they are still available in some places.

I have a shelf just for her fabrics....love them all. Even have them in yards, fq, and such. Also have about 10 pairs of her awesome socks which look like her fabrics, jewlery, books, coffee mug......so I guess I do love her work too. Glad her family is continuing her line.

CorgiNole 12-30-2011 02:21 PM

I have collected fabric from several of her lines for future projects.

I've got one in progress for my sister from her celestial line: http://quiltingcorgis.blogspot.com/2...l-circles.html

Cheers, K

I love her fabric, and her panels are a feast for my eyes.

deemail 12-30-2011 02:54 PM

actually, her fabrics are a bit too much for me...i like more muted shades...but give me her earrings any day of the week....

Raggiemom 12-30-2011 03:09 PM

Love her fabric. I have a couple travel bags done in her designs too.

jemma 12-30-2011 07:18 PM

may her designs live on ----a very special talent---

Cheshirecatquilter 12-30-2011 08:24 PM

You know life is not fair when one person had so much more talent than the rest of us, and then she was taken from us. I love all her stuff. I have some of her fabric, a wonderful huge tote bag, and I've bought a scarf of hers for my sister. Now I need to love myself enough to buy one for me!

I absolutely love all of Laurel Burch's designs. I think it is because her colors really appeal to me. I have a lot of her fabrics but they are in waiting at this time for inspiration. I do have a couple of her mugs, two tote bags, some earings and two of her greeting card collections. Oh I forgot to add a Christmas wall hanging that I found at Goodwill. Yeah for Laurel Burch. I will look for the Laurel Burch quilt books, they sound interesting.

luvstoquilt 12-31-2011 08:53 AM

I made a "Christmas Cat" pillow for my 6 yr old GD..she loves it...it was so much fun to make. I had no idea she died. I thought she was really young. I love her things...one of my favorites was a sweat shirt I got for Christmas several years ago...long since worn out!

Quossum 12-31-2011 09:20 PM

Hi, I'm new here!

Saw this thread and thought I'd show you this Burch quilt I made. It's one of the simplest quilts I've ever made, but I had to whip something up for an occasion, and this way the busy fabrics were showcased.

I really like the bags the company makes from her fabric. Most of my collection is the horses, with a few cats thrown in as well.

Here is (I hope) a picture of a Laurel Burch quilt that I made a couple of Christmases ago for my sister-in-law. It was not too hard and turned out really nice.

peppermint31 01-01-2012 05:02 AM

Several years ago my friend bought me a tote bag from Laurel's design. I love the color and the horses on it!

I love Laurel Burch, especially the Oceans Song pieces. I've been buying some pieces from ebay to keep for a future project. Just this week, the Oceans Song quilt kit, unopened and brand new, was listed. It went for $101.57. I wish it could have been me to buy it. But just no way right now. And I'm only a beginner. Maybe I should finish a few pieces before spending $100 on a kit I may never use. But even if I didn't use it, I would love looking at the fabrics.

huntannette 01-01-2012 07:30 AM

ohhh yes, i love her too....i do have one of her books, mostly appliques, angels, looks a bit complicated for a beginner but eventually....i will keep my fabric for when i`m ready...

nclauri 01-01-2012 07:43 AM

I received one of her purses as aChristmas present a few years ago and fell in love with her vibrant use of colors.

patchsamkim 01-01-2012 07:59 AM

Sadly, she passed away a couple of years ago. Her designs are great and glad to hear that her family will allow them to be still sold. I never bought a lot, but did enjoy the socks I bought and was very sad when they wore out. Several people I know have totes of hers. I will have to check out her scarves...I wear a lot of those.

Great Grandma Judy 01-01-2012 09:34 AM

I too am sorry of her passing, I have liked her fabric for many years. The project that I am working on is a quilted jacket with her fabric. One of these days I will get it done.

caspharm 01-01-2012 09:43 AM

I have her some of her fabrics and used the blenders in quilts. I have one of her books and several tops and bags. I used to live in the SF Bay Area, where the warehouse used to be and go to the annual warehouse sales (more than 10 years ago) to buy her jewelry and bags.

She was an interesting person. She lived in the SF area.

nhweaver 01-01-2012 09:44 AM

I am the one who bought this kit on Ebay, with my Christmas money. It will be a college graduation present 2013 for my oldest grandaughter. She is going on to vetenierian med school, and she fell in love with the panel earlier this fall. I wish it cost less, but she is worth it. The kit has over 9 yards, plus the panel, so price wise is was doable.

Me, too. I have one pair of her earrings, multi-color that go with almost everything. People always ask me about them. it's amazing how many people in our area have never heard of her.

There is a website devoted to Laurel Burch and her designs. There is also a bio on the website and Laurel Burch items for sale. Google Laurel Burch and I am sure you will find it. I found it some time ago so I don't remember the acutal website. I think it is the website for the company that now produces her items.

DixieLee 01-01-2012 01:35 PM

Love love love her. I have a quick made from her aristocratic cat fabric on my bed right now and have a celestial quilt I also made with her stuff. I made up the cat quilt myself and got the celestial quilt out of a magazine and sort of "tweeked it" I have no real experience with her books but I have two handbags and carryalls with her fabric so I'm a lover.

Rosyhf 01-01-2012 01:48 PM

I love anything Laurel Birch. I have several of her fabrics, the horeses, the mermaid lot of cat etc. I have several of her books also....oh one day I will get the inspiration do use those in a quilt/

Scakes 01-01-2012 05:36 PM

I have quite a bit of her fabric and 3 quilt books. I've never made any of the quilts in the books but I love getting out the books and reading them and enjoy all the photos and ideas. I actualy have not cut very much of the fabric but I did make a diaper bag out of her jungle print a couple of years ago.

fred singer 01-01-2012 05:44 PM

wow I didn't know all of these things this has been very informative for me.

paulettepoe 01-01-2012 05:47 PM

Hasn't she been gone for a while?

marymm 01-01-2012 06:20 PM

She was wonderfully talented and creative, achieving a great amount of success despite health problems. I have a lot of her fabric and hate to cut it!

charlottemarie 01-01-2012 07:05 PM

I love her style so much. I had no idea she had books also. Where have you found those books?

fireworkslover 01-01-2012 08:58 PM

I love the rich colors she's used in her fabrics. I made a tree skirt from a print this year. The print is the triangle w/ a French braid for the rest. Each braid is a color from the print. Its gorgeous!

KathyPhillips 01-01-2012 10:38 PM

Yes, I love her fabric, too. I have some and a large tote bag I found in the airport in Albuquerque, NM last year. When I saw it, I just had to have it! Glad that the family is continuing her wonderful designs.

KathyPhillips 01-01-2012 10:42 PM

I bet that jacket is really beautiful! You will have to post a photo, please?

A large assortment of Laurel Burch jewelry, scarves, bags and socks are available from The Spotted Cat Company, and they even have sales, unusual for LB items. I've bought some of each of those categories over time, and always on sale, usually 40-50% off. I'm into cats myself, but in spite of the site's name they also carry her other designs. Other designers too, but no fabric or quilt books. They also offer 15% off your first order, even for the on-sale items. www.thespottedcatcompany.com.

I'd never heard of Laurel Burch before I read this thread. I really love the bright, vibrant colors so.......you know the rest of the story. I have several yards coming. Also got to checking out other things in her line and since hubby and myself are going on a business trip next month decided I needed (Ok....wanted a new travel tote.). Not only did I buy the large tote but also got the smaller bag to put my Redwork in and maybe some quilt pieces to put together by hand while in the car and in the hotel. I'm more of a dog person so when I saw this I fell in love with it!!

Kehoeta 01-03-2012 01:08 PM

I have borrowed many quilting books from the library prior to purchase... I love the Laurel Burch look and feel, so I bought them outright... .
