And how do you fix it?

Most times when I use my camera to take photos of quilts, quilt blocks, fabric postcards, fabrics etc I often cannot get the correct color. Even with 'editing', enhancing, color balancing etc. the colors either come out too dark, wrong shade etc etc etc. Usually it is blues and reds but it happens with other colors too. And I have a new digital camera, so it isn't an issue of using an old camera.

I've tried it with flash, without flash, in natural light etc.

Any other suggestions?

Check out your machine to see if it is using automatic filters. In the old days, the color intensity could be varied by adding different colored filters to the lens to get the problems you are describing.

I would check your manual (may be online these days :)) and take some test photos of colors against white background and play with the settings until they come out right. It may mean your factory settings were installed incorrectly (or a piece of plastic got left over the lens to keep it from getting scratched -- and that plastic needs to be removed to get true colors).

Try taking your photo outside in the bright shade.

I try to take pictures outside on a cloudy but bright day, and I do a bit of Photoshopping to get the colors adjusted and true.

Another possibility is that it's not your camera at all, it's your monitor.

it is probably the computer- not the camera...the colors on the computer being adjusted will probably solve your problems

this was my thought. when i send a pic to my daughter and look at it there, the colors are much better. i'm used to my monitor now, so i just go with it... i don't like fussing with the settings.

You also want to make sure the light is behind you and aimed on the actual quilt. Make sure the background (behind the quilt) is never a stark white.

I don't look at the colors now - everybody's monitor seems to be different.
I study the contrast and value instead.
