Anyone ever cut up a 1600 quilt?

I'm working on a 1600 quilt top (I haven't sewn in months, and figured this would be a quick, easy project to get me back in the mood), but I'm not crazy about the lack of color separation thus far. Has anyone ever sewn two or three of the rows together and then cut up the the sewn strips to use in a different way?

Peckish 12-28-2012 11:28 AM

Yes. I did not like how mine turned out, so I cut it again and made a postage stamp quilt.

There is a video on YouTube that shows sewing the strips and then cutting it inot blocks and flipping the blocks around. Of course, I can't think of the title of the video right now. I'll do some searching while I wait for my starch to dry.

MaryMo 12-28-2012 11:35 AM

Peckish, I do so very much like what you did with that original quilt. a very good solution to all our problem quilts! Thanks!

DebraK 12-28-2012 11:38 AM

oh, I like that much better than a 1600! looks great.

Valerie Ann 12-28-2012 11:39 AM

Peckish, that is fabulous! What size are the strips?

quiltnchik 12-28-2012 11:44 AM

Peckish, I *love* it! Did you cut your strips 2.5 inches? Please do tell. You've given me hope :)

Peckish 12-28-2012 11:49 AM

It started out as a batik jelly roll, 2.5" strips. I re-cut it at 2.5 inches, which includes the seam allowances, and sewed it back together. This is what it looked like before I cut it. Ick!

I did the 1600 quilt at the beginning of the year and really didn't like how it looked so I put it away. I was just thinking to cut it up into something else to make it prettier. Thanks for the idea!

Peggi, i love what you did with your original quilt. my first thought was... what if you get two colors in the same new square. i had to search hard, but i see that you did. it really doesn't show up, though. looks fantastic. i would never have thought to do such a thing. thanks to quiltnchik for posting the question

ArtsyOne 12-28-2012 01:22 PM

Quiltnchik - same thing happened the first time I made a 1600 quilt. I wanted to make a 48" square baby quilt and it was sort of like using variegated yarn, with blotches of colors and often the same fabrics ending up next to each other. I ended up cutting the strips into 48" lengths so that I would have more control. The next two quilts I made I just cut all strips into 48" lengths at the beginning.

dunster 12-28-2012 01:51 PM

Peckish, I think your original 1600 quilt was beautiful! But I like the cut-up one too.

quiltnchik 12-28-2012 02:43 PM

Thanks for all the tips. I'm still working on this "45-minute" quilt top (since yesterday), because I keep getting sidetracked by barn chores, etc.. I'll see how it looks once I finish, but I really like the idea of making a postage stamp quilt out of it instead. :)

I tried to avoid repeating the same two squares in a row, so I ended up turning some of the rows around, and I think there were a couple of strips that I took apart in the middle, flipped the ends around, and sewed back together again. My biggest concern was that some of the squares ended up being smaller than 2.5", but once it was all put back together again it didn't really matter, they don't draw the eye like I expected them to.

Love the idea. Be sure to post the finished quilt.

Jingle 12-28-2012 07:40 PM

I have seen some of the 1600 quilts with applique flowers and such sewn onto them, I liked those better.

I liked your original Peckish and I liked the finished one also.

Peggi that really turn out nice!!!!!

Way to go!! It's great either way! I do love the colors.:)

I appliqued a large Christmas tree on my 1600 Christmas quilt - and it really made a difference. My friend is going to do one in pastels and applique flowers on it. I agree sometimes the fabrics were too close together. Probably won't make another one.

I appliqued on my Christmas 1600 also on the front and back. I liked the 1600 as a background. This quilt has won two awards. The last one, was 2nd place for all the applique.

I do love the look of Peckish's quilt once she cut it up. Beautiful colors.

AnnT 12-29-2012 04:34 AM

I thnk it looks so much better cut and resewn. Good job!

jhoward 12-29-2012 05:12 AM

The colors are beautiful! Wow!!

quiltnchik 12-29-2012 05:26 AM

Wow, Kathleen! That quilt is stunning. I can see why it has won awards. Great job!

teddysmom 12-29-2012 05:28 AM

I made a 1600 quilt out of a jelly roll that was given to me. I didn't really like the jelly roll to begin with and I like it even less now that it is a 1600 quilt. I was going to donate it and can't bring myself to finish it because I don't like it. I will have to cut it up, maybe I will like it more. I have thought about cutting it up but never did. Good idea. I love yours.

CGail 12-29-2012 06:58 AM

Peggi, thanks for the idea. For the past two days, I have worked on a jelly roll 1600 quilt. I cut my own strips from my stash. My plans are to make it into one of those 'shawl' type of wraps for nursing home patients. I don't really like the pieced top. Now with your idea, I will cut it into strips again today and resew. I think I'll like it better. After I quilt it, then I will cut out the 'neck' space and then bind. Thanks for your idea.

marymay 12-29-2012 07:06 AM

Now this is so smart to do, Thank you for sharing.

KimmerB 12-29-2012 07:35 AM

Thank you this was just what I needed. I was going to start a Jelly roll but was not sure I really liked some that I saw that the colors seem to be concentrated in 2 lines. My friend suggested cutting it and resewing it but I was not sure it would work. You have made me see it in a new light. I never thought about the appliques either, decision time! I have to get over a New Years party here first than I can start. Again Thank you, this site is great I do not even have to ask the questions and the answers appear.

tulip43 12-29-2012 07:41 AM

our guild done this quilt for our Care quilt day. most people appliqued something on. there were balloons, flowers, animals and others. they turned out quite nice. had never seen one cut up but I ike it.

wishfulthinking 12-29-2012 07:42 AM

Here is what one blogger did with her jelly roll race quilt: http://artquiltmaker.com/blog/2012/0...g-and-the-end/

I like it so much I'm thinking of making one just to cut up!

happymrs 12-29-2012 07:55 AM

Oh, I love your finish postage stamp quilt, what a great solution for a quilt you weren't happy with! Looks wonderful now!

nancyw 12-29-2012 08:17 AM

I'm thinking of cutting up my 1600 quilt to make a purse.

Steady Stiching 12-29-2012 08:30 AM

I cut up a couple of strips into 2.5 inch squares and inserted the squares at the end of each strip. It broke up the long strips nicely...however...I then commenced to sew it as instructed in the 1600 video...mine turned out too long and narrow and has I must say become a UFO.

deb8746 12-29-2012 09:19 AM

I am so glad to see others wanting to change the 1600 top it was one of my first and still unfinished.

JoanneS 12-29-2012 09:30 AM

I haven't been interested in making a 1600 - seemed rather boring. However, recutting and using it as background for applique makes for a stunning quilt! Can't wait to try it. Of course, I have to add it to my bucket list, but I do have several jelly rolls ~ ~ ~

PolkaBabe 12-29-2012 09:51 AM

I like it either way.

kydeb 12-29-2012 10:08 AM

Great idea! I don't like the 1600 quilts either. I've made a couple of them - ended up cutting them into smaller quilts and donating them to QFKs. They seemed okay smaller. I really like the cut up version!!

JanieH 12-29-2012 11:25 AM

What great ideas these all are. Makes me want to go ahead and make a 1600 quilt and see what it happens!

Sewnoma 12-29-2012 11:46 AM

I have! I can't find my camera (AUUGH!) or I would post pictures...I did a 1600 out of black/brown/yellow batiks and then cut it apart into 6-1/2" squares on the bias and then re-assembled those into 4-patch squares with black sashing between and black borders them to enlarge the quilt. It turned out pretty good! I gave it to my FIL for Christmas, he really liked it. :) It came out sort of evoking a feeling of inlaid wood due to the colors.
