My Mom made me this quilt about 10 years ago. The person she paid to quilt it for her must have used bad thread on the top because (as you can see in the pictures) it has almost all come out. I have started to remove some of the white thread that was used on the top of the quilt and it just falls apart, so I am sure it was bad thread. My Mom now has macular Deg. and her eyesight is almost gone. I want to refurbish this quilt, and my thoughts are to just remove all the old thread and just redo the quilting, but I have also decided that since the flowers on this quilt are appliqued on, and some of the stitching on the applique has started to come off as well, I probably should disassemble the entire quilt, fix the places in the applique, replace the batting and THEN requilt it !! If anyone out there has any helpful input on this I would truly appreciate it.

What a shame! I've never seen that happen before. Looks like you have a lot or work ahead of you.

What a beautiful quilt! I truly believe that if it were me, I would first pin baste it if the batting is okay before I took out all of the bad stitching. Then I would take out the remaining bad threads and start fixing it.
That's just my opinion.......good luck.....I'm sure you'll make it beautiful! Linda D. |

I have taken a quilt apart - it was one my friend made for her Dad. She used a sheet on the back & was in a hurry to finish it, so didn't put enough quilting in it & the sheet eventually just shredded! I picked it all apart for her, fixed the places on the front that had also come apart and now it's waiting for her to put it back together again.
I agree with lfw045 too - pin baste & check the batting first, then go ahead & do what needs done. I bet it will be lovely again when you are done! |
ifw.......that's what I thought I was going to do to start with, but after I discovered the applique on some of the flowers needed to be re-sewn as well, I realized that the backing had to be removed or the stitching would show on the back side of the quilt too. humfffff !! Then !!!! I realized if I take the backing off, I would have to remove the hand stitching my mother did to sew the border down. I really did not want to compromise any of the stitching my mom did, as she will never be able to do any hand stitching, or stitching of any kind any more.
I am considering doing some of the applique repairs by hand now. It might not look as good, but at least it wouldn't show on the back side of the quilt. YUP !!!!! I got a lot of work ahead of me............ :roll: :lol: :? |

You have quite a job ahead of you, but you will feel real good when it is done - especially since your Mom won't be able to make any more quilts. Macular degeneration is another awful disease of our older folks.

Gee sorry to here the troubles on this quilt....there is a lot of reasons why the tread can do what it is doing...10 years is a good long time...if it has been washed a lot ....type of thread...like poylester and tempurture of the water was to hot... or harse soap....if the sun shined on it....etc....
My Dad requilted a quilt....mainly he just sewed it together so it would not fall apart and it was useable....he did pick out all the old stitching... it came out nice How is the applique put on...hand stiched??? do you feel it needs new batting???? I think there is alot of different things you can do....since it is so important to you ...what you have in mind would make it last longer...good luck.... |
I really don't know if this would apply to what you want to do with the quilt, but......I would handstitch the applique. Then do the quilting.
I quilted a quilt that had been hand tied. This was a lady's first quilt and she hand tied it to get it finished quicker. Well, something got spilled on it and my daughter (it was her mother in law's quilt) asked me if I could quilt it for her. At first I just thought I would do the meandering in big areas on it to keep it together and then I found out that she had the cotton batting in it. So what I thought would be a more simple job, became something that took alot more time to do... But quilting it when it was done was not hard to do. As a matter of fact, it was a little easier. I have a longarm so it wasn't that hard to do. But it turned out nice in the end. Before I got my longarm, I sent my quilts out to be done. I worked so hard to find just the right pattern for my son. He loved it when it was finished, but after about 1 1/2 yrs the stitches came out from the quilting. So I asked him if he wanted me to requilt it. As of yet I haven't gotten it from him, but as long as I worked on the quilt itself, I don't want him to just get rid of it because of the finished quilting that has come out.
