Ok, so I'm making a Twister Quilt. It's going to be 61 x 61 including the 6 inch border. I started with 36-10 inch squares surrounded by a 6 1/2" border, and cut that apart.

Now, with that information....

Can someone tell me how many 10" squares I would need to make a quilt roughly 70 x 80?

You would need 7x8, or 56, to come up with 70x80.

But that's not how the math works in this case.

I'm sure there is a table somewhere but I'm too lazy to look it up. Mmind you, I've never done one of these quilts.

So, as I'm doing anything to avoid looking at my taxes, let me take a crack at this:

You did a 6x6 10" block layout with a border, that ended up as 61" quilt top, including the additional 6" border.

So the block center was 49"x49", ergo the TWISTED blocks have to finish at 7", right?

If that's correct, I think you need 72 10" blocks.

If you have a setting of 8x9 10" blocks with a 6" border, you'd have 90 "intersections" in which to cut the TWISTED blocks.

And that's how many (90) 7" finished blocks you need to make a 9x10 layout, which would result in a quilt top of 63"x70".
Add a 6" border around the whole thing and that brings you to 75" x 82". Close enough.

So,yeah, I'm sticking with 72 10" blocks.

Is that even in the ballpark?

My taxes might actually be easier.

Ok...I'm looking at this another way now.

I started with 36-10" blocks and a border.

After that, I cut them, and ended up with 49-8" blocks. Finish size 7 1/2".

So, if I do 7 x 8 = 56 plus border, I should end up with 8 x 9 = 72 8" blocks (7 1/2" finish) yeilding 60 x 72...I add my 6" border, and I should have 72" x 84".

That should be good...I think.

If not, I can always add another border!

ooc, what is the size of the ruler? 7.5"or 8"?

I assumed it was 7.5" based on your original measurements.

We're doing the same thing, just coming out with different numbers because of the block size.

Yelp clear as MUD to me.still trying to figure that pattern out.

I'm WRONG! Here I'm saying that the blocks are 7 1/2" finish, yet I'm calculating them at 8" finish. URGH! Sometimes I strongly dislike math.
7 1/2" x 8 = 60" + 12" border (6" on each side) = 72"
7 1/2" x 9 = 67 1/2" + 12" = 79 1/2"
72" x 79 1/2" ~ NOT big enough.

So, I'm going to start with 72 - 10" blocks. That should give me:
7 1/2" x 9 = 67 1/2" +12" = 79 1/2"
7 1/2" x 10 = 75" + 12" = 87"
79 1/2" x 87" = BIG ENOUGH! Actually, perfect!

Thanks for everyone's help. I just needed to think this through. :)

Boy, I'm glad you figured it out! I was afraid I'd have to start using my fingers and toes to work on the answer. Not that it would be the "right" answer

Hey, that's what I said upthread! ;) ;) ;)

But I still don't get the 7.5" finished if your 1st quilt top finished at 61".

Wouldn't the block center portion have to be 49"x49" (which means 7x7 layout at 7" finished) + 6" border = 61".

It's not important but those little things drive me crazy.
