I started this pattern last night. I try to enter one crochet item in our district fair every Sept. So far I have won blue ribbons for crochet every year. Not as lucky with my quilt entries. :? :-D :-D :-D

I used to but not anymore. I don't find time to quilt and do other crafts too. I am making a crocheted afgan for my greatgrand baby a little at a time.
your project looks really pretty. Hope we can see a picure of it when finished.

karielt 02-12-2010 09:55 AM

Hey thanks for the link I have crocheted for 30 years love crocheting with cotton thread. Make sure you post a picture.

heidikins 02-12-2010 10:10 AM

I love to thread crochet! I make edgings (I call them laces) for pillowcases and give them as bridal shower gifts. My grandmother made each of her GD's a pair of pillowcases one Christmas. I still remember her working on mine and didn't know it was for me! She is long passed but her laces are still there and maybe I'll give them to my GD (if I EVER get one!) Your pattern is beautiful! What thread (brand) are you going to use? Do you use it for most of your projects?

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-12-2010 10:30 AM

That is gorgeous! I crochet. I can even crochet with thread if ......... my Mommy starts it for me! I can never get the base part going. I need something to hang on to. How's that for the red faced confession of the day!

Maksi 02-12-2010 10:39 AM

I'm not very good in crochetting. I only know how to make simple things. Now I have a knitting addict. :D
I'm making hats for Innocents drinks.

tinam 02-12-2010 10:47 AM

Your pattern is very pretty. I have made so many of the doillies in the past I run out of room to put them

tinam 02-12-2010 10:49 AM

I have been trying to learn paper piecing a quilt. Has anyone tried it?

tkhooper 02-12-2010 11:06 AM

I can thread crochet as long as it isn't black. I can't see well enough to see the black threads anymore. I guess I could put a white pillowcase on my lap and then try it lol.

That's a nice pattern.

I'm just learning I've done two paper piece blocks. One was of 4 diamonds and one was a birds in flight block.

chris_quilts 02-12-2010 02:14 PM

Very pretty doily and WAY above my ability level. My grandmother did all kinds of thread crochet, even a bed topper piece for one of her daughters. What color will you make it?

Oklahoma Suzie 02-12-2010 02:16 PM

Years ago, I made butterfly magnets for the fridge. But have not done anything lately.

BellaBoo 02-12-2010 02:50 PM

I like poly thread better than cotton for crochet. After laundering the item doesn't have to be stretched that much to lay flat and it is stronger then cotton thread. I bought a lot of America's Best crochet thread which is 100% Spun Polyester when it was on clearance a few years ago for $1 a ball. I have plenty to use up in white and ecru colors. It says Bedspread weight so I'd say a size 10. Each ball is 1000 yards. I really like Knit Cro Sheen for doilys but I can't find that anymore!

butterflywing 02-12-2010 02:55 PM

i once tried to teach myself to crochet. i started with a square potholder. it was the world's first trapezoidal potholder. never again.

fatnsassy 02-12-2010 06:20 PM

I do a lot of thread crocheting. I have to keep my hands busy when watching tv in the evenings. I make fancy, ( the harder the better) doilies. I have very few of them that I have made for I give them to everyone that will take one. It is an addiction that I have had for years, but I think that quilting is trying to take its place.

mpspeedy 02-12-2010 06:26 PM

I went through a phase when I made crocheted throws for everyone and everything. I wasn't very good at cotton thread crocheting. Your work is lovely. I like to buy the unique yarns they sell now and make a chain with them. I then couch it on plain fleece Linus blankets as trim.

Thank you for the link....I used to crochet constantly. Took it everywhere with me...even to work. LOL I, too used enter things in our local fair. I quit when I heard the judge make comments during the judging part. (quit entering things till I started quilting.) Her comments were about a bed doll that I made...She said (and I quote)...OH my God...what awful colors....Get it out of my sight!!! I absolutely hate those colors.
She didn't even look at the workmanship....just that she didn't like the color. It was a southern belle style with a pale blue dress and parasol. (it only took me 6 months to get the pattern right...designed my own. ) The same year I had entered 2 thread doilies with seed beads crocheted in and they both got blue ribbons. The thread was like sewing machine thread it was so tiny...I used a size 13 steel crochet hook. :D Had lots of fun stringing all the beads on for the pattern cuz you put them on backwards. :D Took a little bit of thinking :D but it was really fun for me. :D I have gotten away from crocheting since my hands aren't so good anymore but would love to get back to it. :D

Favorite Fabrics 02-12-2010 06:57 PM

I used to do all sorts of crocheting & knitting, a long, long time ago... let's say, back when I was in high school and had way more free time than I do now. I also used to enter things in our county fair. There used to be so many entries in knitting, sewing, crocheting, and embroidery that you were lucky if you even got your item on display. They used to have piles and piles of afghans, tea towels, and baby sets. Now they have a hard time filling up the space! Same thing with canned goods (though I never tried my hand at that). There is still quite a good showing, as to quilts. Guess that's the only art form that is still in vogue.

The doily pattern you're using is lovely. Do you have a round table to use it on?

Loretta 02-12-2010 10:20 PM

I made a doily similar to that many years ago but don't crochet anymore. Meybe I should do a little quilting and crocheting both. I always enjoyed doing it.

CRH 02-12-2010 10:39 PM

Used to crochet a lot, have been wanting to do a project again, so thanks for the link!!

newfiegirl 02-13-2010 05:53 AM

I have done some paper piecing. If you go to www.quilterscache.com, and check out the lessons section, you will find a wealth of info re: this and other things. There is also a host of free (~1400) patterns you can download, including multiple paper piecing, simple and a little more complicated. I like paper piecing, since I don't have to worry about matching seams (I'm a fairly new quilter). Good Luck!

Carol A 02-13-2010 07:07 AM

I'm a newbie-love the newsletter and topics-just wanted to thank you for this site-I've only been quilting for just over a yr -love it-have been crocheting for yrs-like the pattern you shared-thanks again!

Kathi in PA 02-13-2010 09:49 AM

I thread crochet and I really like it. I made my first GD a dress and matching bonnet to come home from the hospital 13 yrs. ago and now it is mounted in a shadow box - with little bit of spit-up and all...

I love to paper piece. The best place to get started is at www.caroldoak.com - there are lots of freebie patterns on her site, and she also has a yahoo group. Lots of help there! Enjoy!!

How about trying tieing a safety pin on your thread and giving yourself something to hold on to while starting to crochet? Or making your first loop and putting a safety pin in that loop to hold on to while making your chain, if that is the way you are going.. If you are making a circle, like for a doily, you might be able to do the same. I know sometimes it seems I'm all thumbs until I get started, and having something to hold that can be removed easily might help. Hope this helps you start.

Thanks for the pattern, BellaBoo

janet conn 02-13-2010 12:27 PM

Hi, thanks for the pattern. I'm crocheting a double row Pineapple design. It will be around 25" across. I have to count from the original doily. Verrrry slow going. Peewee from Pa.

My mom always crocheted using thread. She passed away in April and I took up where she left off. I worked on several things for Christmas gifts. I don't know that I would enter a fair with mine, but I know several who do. It is fun, but I am really enjoying quilting. I just pick up my hooks when I am missing Mom so much I can't stand it.

I do thread crochet occasionally (and I need to replace some of my tattered doilies soon); but I must say quilting is my favorite craft of late.

ScrapQuilter 02-13-2010 04:12 PM

So glad to see we have so many who crochet or have crocheted..... I just love to crochet and have post pictures of some doilies.... Love the pattern you have picked to do... Just finished doing two bolero's for my granddaughter. Will post pictures when I get a chance.

THanks, BellaBoo. I have been looking for a hand project while visiting my DS & DIL. Bingo!!

QUILTEMS 02-13-2010 06:10 PM

Love all kinds of crochet. I have done many afgans and doilies. My sister asked me to stop, she said she has 120 doilies in her cupboard. Guess I went overboard. Love that pattern, will have to try it. Thanks.

heidikins 02-13-2010 07:56 PM

BellaBoo, I got off on my story about my grandmother and forgot to thank you for posting the pattern! I also wanted to ask do any of you followed a "shorthand" patten (such as those you would find in the Japanese books)? What do you think of them?

Looks like a pretty pattern. I went thru a phase of crocheting doilys in the '90s. I made a pretty large round tablecloth in ecru, but when I got to the last few rounds, it wouldn't lie flat, kind of pooched up in the middle. I tried to find a mistake that was causing that, but never found it, and never finished it. It's in a bag in a closet somewhere.

OK, on that pooched up center, could you expound on it, make a little pillow that will fit under it and sew it in and make it into a pin cushion, if it isn't a big doily. If it is big, you, you might be able to put a large bowl or vace on the center and it will hide the fact that it doesn't lay flat. You could try getting it wet and see if you can stretch it out to lay flat or flatten it down in the center while wet. If it is big, would it make a good decoration on a pillow that has a pouchy surface anyway? If it pouches a lot, shape it so the pooch looks like a hat center? Have you tried any of these things? I hate to see a lot of work gone to waste, and end up in a bag in a closet. Could it be appliqued to something and quilted on in the center to make it flatten out? OK, well, that's my 2 cents worth on the subject.
Janis
OK< I just re-read your message... TABLECLOTH !!! That would make a HUGE pin cushion!!! but I'm leaving in the stuff I wrote in case it will help anyone else. But you might try wetting and blocking it in the center to see if that would help. I still hate ti see it wind up in a closet.

Ive crocheted dollies for my mother, and friends and family havent crechted any thing for me our my hubby.

Janis 02-13-2010 10:41 PM

Does anyone want OLD, and I mean OLD crochet, etc. patterns? Here's a web site where you can copy them for your own use, but not to sell. The fact that I can print off old patterns for free is good enough for me. If you make English patterns, be sure to note that the English 'double crochet' is the American 'single crochet'.

thanks for sharing these, I will definitely check them out-love to do thread crochet-I have a bedspread that a family member's mother in law started probably thirty yr ago and it stayed in her closet forever-she sent it to me and I had to figure the pattern but finally finished it about 8 yr ago and have in on the bed in an extra bedroom :P

Yes I crochet with thread as well as with yarn.

When I travel, etc. I always take a crochet product along. My favorite is making dish clothes. They are normally about 8 inches square, of many designs that I make as I go along and never wear out.

I sell them for $1.00 each. Anyone interested? Please reply.
