Appreciate your advice--PLEASE!!!

I did the craftsy BOM. I added two of my own blocks because I did not want to do the paper piecing. There were some problems with the instructions. Anyway, I can't decide what to use for the sashing and borders. As yo can see, it is black and white with just a little red. I would like to use red, black and white for sashing, borders and binding. I would love to hear your ideas. I keep changing my mind. Also, how would you quilt this? Thanks so much.

I truly believe that individual block look best with a dark sashing kinda like when a mat on artwork. I might try black sashing and then a red border 2 inches, black border 3 inches and red border 4 inches and then a black binding. I have used this arrangement on quilts and like the results. There is lots of white already so I won't opt for that. Nicely done!

That sounds great carslo. Thanks so much.

Great looking blocks! How about black sashing with red cornerstones? Then maybe a white border and then the black or red again depending on how big a bed you are making it for.

I like the idea of black sashing with red cornerstones. I think that would be just enough red to go with the blocks. For a border I would do a thin red border then a black border.

Black sashing with 9 patch red and black cornerstones. Narrow red border (or flange) then a black border.

Thanks everyone.

I'm doing Craftsy BOM and am ready to do the sashing and borders, also. I used the same fabric that Amy did, so I'm using the white sashing and white borders. I love my quilt. I had never done paper piecing before and really didn't understand how to do it until my mentor from this board sent me a DVD by Carol Doaks on paper piecing. Then it was so simple. Now I love paper piecing. I heard she has a YouTube video on paper piecing. It's not hard to do if someone that really knows how to do it teaches you how. I bought 1/4" ruler and use a postcard taped to the ruler. That makes all the difference. You should give it another try. I love my 2 paper piece blocks the best. They are perfect! Love your quilt. I agree that black sashing would look the best with red cornerstones. Do a 1 1/2" sashing like Amy is doing and then do a 1 1/2" border in black. I think that would look killer!!!!

Black sashing w/ red cornerstones, then a very narrow red border and then a black one! Looks great.

jcrow--thanks for the info. I have tried PP and just can't get it. Maybe I will check out the UTube video. I got discouraged and just wanted to get the quilt done, so I gave up on the craftsy PP.

Thanks everyone

I recently did a b/w rail fence and put a black border on it but added a narrow red flange. I can see that on you quilt, too as you have a splash of red here and there and the flange was narrow and didn't over power. Your quilt is gorgeous by the way.

I also did the BOM,, including paper piecing....directions were just fine...I've NEVER paper pieced and didn't have a bit of problem....is now my favorite technique and I'm paper piecing everything in sight!! I'm putting 5-6" sashing as I'm making it grow for a king size bed!

solstice3 11-12-2012 05:08 AM

definitely a dark sashing

Very pretty quilt! I'm not a fan of pp either. I like the idea of black sashings with red cornerstones. I'd probably do a black border around it and then red. I usually have to put 1 layer on; look at it; decide on the next;... Red and black cornerstones on the borders sounds nice too. Would love to see a photo posted after you have it finished.

I think it needs some color, a great red for sashing and a wonderful red print for a border.
Audition several pieces of fabric to see what the quilt needs, look at each fabric for a couple days, the quilt will tell you what it needs.

I really like this idea!! I think that it would look great!

I would do black sashing with red squares at the intersections, then maybe 2 borders as wide you want to get the size, using a more white print surrounded by a darker/solid fabric.

Not to hijack your post, but I did a similar sampler quilt in red and white. I used white sashing with red cornerstones, though I agree yours would look great with black sashing and red cornerstones. I've enclosed a photo so you can see how mine looks, in case if helps you. I've removed the red border shown here and plan to add a wider one of the same red fabric.

Went to a class on PP and it helped so much. I recommend watching videos and taking a class if you can - it all helps. PP has turned out to be one of my favorite techniques and I'm looking forward to making a PP quilt this winter. Good luck on your quilt - terrific BOM!

Pink!!! Hot pink to be exact :)...you asked. Black would be nice too.

Oksewnsew 11-12-2012 05:36 PM

All the ideas, which to choose? Well I will throw in my thought - how about a dark gray sashing, the use the red/black ideas for the borders? Just an idea... It will be very pretty regardless how you do it..

Geri B 11-13-2012 02:24 PM

As far as border....if you could find wild pattern that has red, black and white in it that might be striking. As far as quilting...I would do each block individually, accenting whatever the pattern of that block is, something simple in sash and cornerstone and maybe just 2/3" vertical lines in border.....very modern type quilting to match the color, design of quilt.....JMHO...congrats on finishing the blocks!!!

I love your quilt sustraley! Congrats on finishing :D I didn't do the BOM but bought Leah Day's FMQ class from Craftsy. She quilts these blocks in this class. I was just watching a part of it. It's a great class and I already learned a lot different designs.
