Artist Statement
Hello,
I've done a search in here but didn't find answers. I was accepted into art quilt show. They want an artist statement. I have never done one. I've google it but they seem so complicated. Is there an outline of questions to ask yourself or does anyone have suggestions? take care Zelda |
If you googled it you should have come across this page: http://www.mollygordon.com/resources...es/artstatemt/
Seems like the author of the page laid out a simple step by step process of writing one. |
I don't very often do art quilts but that one always frustrates me. Some people have deep meaning and personal feelings revealed about their art quilt. Mine are always something like ....I liked the fabric and I thought it would make a cool picture .........Or I found a cool design that I wanted to put into fabric.....

Some questions to ask yourself:
Why do you make art? How do you make your art? What materials do you use? What does your art mean to you? Are you trying to convey any emotions? What inspires you? Are there major influences in your work? How do your technique, style, and methods relate to your medium? Typically artist statements are 3 paragraphs. 1st one - talk about why you make the art you do, what influences you and inspires you 2nd one - explain a little about your process and the materials you use 3rd one - talk about your current work or a specific piece, explaining in more detail how and why you made it - leave room for the viewer to see things for themselves, don't dictate what they should see or feel Does that help any? |
Ghostrider, that info would help me. Sounds perfect.

Congratulations on being accepted. As a non-artist, I often wonder HOW IN THE WORLD the artist made the quilt. I'm interested in the technique, and not so much in the inspiration, unless it's something simple and human.

Thank you every one. I'll give it a whirl.
Thanks Dunster, This is the first time I've entered anything! I'm excited!! |
Don't lose track of the fact that your artist statement should be aimed at ALL viewers, not just other quilt artists. Best of luck!
