I should be receiving these fabrics any day now that I got on eBay. I ordered 10 FQs of each color. I don't have anything planned for them, I just loved the fabric.

Any suggestions of patterns that are particulary suited to Asian fabrics?

quilter1962 04-13-2009 01:17 PM

WOW Pam

Those look so scrummy, the colours are so beautiful - I wasn't a huge fan of Oriental prints but I have to confess they are starting to grow on me.
Sorry I don't have any suggestions for their use. Good luck with what ever you decide to use them for. :D

I have no doubt that you will once again amaze us with something quite spectacular.

The fabrics are really lovely, enjoy the planning!!

sidmona 04-13-2009 01:24 PM

I'm using a oriental lantern and chinese quilt block with the fabrics I am waiting for. Found oriental lantern on about.com and the chinese quilt block on quilterscache.com.

SulaBug 04-13-2009 01:28 PM

Oh Pam,
Those FQ's are absolutely gorgeous!! :D I don't have an idea, to share with you, but I will certainly be looking forward to see what you come up with. Keep sharing, we love your postings!!

Those are beautiful! Asian fabrics always seem so peaceful, even the bright colored ones. I love fat quarters.

Jim's Gem 04-13-2009 01:44 PM

Beautiful fabrics. I have several of those I bought at my store that was closing. There are many options for quilts. Don't have a specific suggestion.

mamabird3 04-13-2009 02:07 PM

I can't wait ot see what you make with those... asian fans comes to mind!

pittsburgpam 04-13-2009 02:25 PM

I hadn't thought of fans but that sounds good. Could use some of the fancy stitches on my new sewing maching to embellish the curved edge in gold. I think there is gold in the fabrics.

leona07 04-13-2009 02:32 PM

Where did you get the fabric?? My mom has some beautiful artwork from when she lived in the philippines and it is in greens. She planned her bedroom around those paintings. That green fabric would make something wonderful for her room!

AtHomeSewing 04-13-2009 02:35 PM

Wow, those are gorgeous! Nice find!

I got it on eBay from debsews.

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Debsews-...__W0QQ_armrsZ1

There are some really beautiful fabrics there. When I decide what I'm going to do I may get something very subtle for a background and something for a border.

littlehud 04-13-2009 02:55 PM

Oh my goodness. So pretty. I love them.

littlehud 04-13-2009 02:57 PM

I went to your posted site. Big mistake on my part cause I could spend lots of money there. Her fabrics are beautiful. I'm going back after payday.

pittsburgpam 04-13-2009 03:00 PM

Thanks for the link. I was thinking earlier about a pattern that had the little end of the fan instead of the traditional 1/4 circle and there is one there. I like the idea of the solid fan to show the fabric but I think it would be cool to actually take that solid and cut it into the fan wedges, sew them back together so that the fabric pattern is interrupted at each wedge like an actual fan might be when it is opened.

I was also thinking of embroidering a black tassel where the fan meets the triangle base and runs out of the block onto the border, like it is hanging outside the "window" of the block.

tlrnhi 04-13-2009 03:03 PM

Beautiful!
I have some of the red that's there. Got it at Walmart. I do have a couple pieces of the yellow color too!
It's really pretty stuff!

Maribeth 04-13-2009 03:08 PM

Pam, Shiboridragon.com sells a great fan ruler along with some great patterns for that fabulous fabric and there service is great - quick and very responsive to feedback.

Butterfli19 04-13-2009 03:48 PM

Pam - how about the silhouette of a woman and child carrying parasols or fans, standing in a flower garden? You could make a back view - hair and kimono - so you wouldn't have to worry about the faces. Border the quilt as they are walking toward or are in a garden.

Also check out Kumiko Sudo's books. She has meticulous instructions and some very creative ideas.

Quilt4u 04-13-2009 03:54 PM

Love them.

pittsburgpam 04-13-2009 04:36 PM

I like the idea of parasols but I don't know if I want to do people. I'll think about it and do some doodling.

Butterflyspain 04-14-2009 12:00 AM

Do you have the March/April issue of Fons and Porter, there is a lovely quilt with Asian fabrics on the front cover and if you go to
www.FonsandPorter.com
look for the quilt called Kimono Rose. I love it.

What do you think???

Butterflyspain 04-14-2009 12:03 AM

PS I am just waiting on some Asian Fabrics coming from E Quilter, canīt wait.

They have an amazing range there if you want to check on them

this is what i was going to suggest. i have some blocks that i need to piece (block-of-the-month - all different colors) and i bought this magazine for some ideas. don't know if it's still on the stands, but you might be able to get it at your library? if not, let me know.

pittsburgpam 04-14-2009 06:09 AM

The Fons and Porter one is beautiful. Lots of ideas forming but they'll have to simmer for awhile since I have my oldest daughter's quilt to do. I really hope the fabric comes today, can't wait to see it and touch it in person.

I wish my local Walmart had fabric still, I didn't know they carried things like that.

That's where I first found Asian fabric. I'll be making another trip back around June, I hope, so I can do some shopping. :)

RedGarnet222 04-14-2009 07:59 AM

I don't know if you like the cutsie patterns, but the little japanese laterns would be adorable done up with these fabrics. Or maybe somethng with coy fish on it?

pittsburgpam 04-14-2009 08:23 AM

I looked at the lanterns and it's a possibility for an element in the design. :-) I have an idea about a parasol that I am kicking around. That and a fan design.

Tiffany 04-14-2009 09:11 AM

Fan designs are very oriental. I love those fabrics and thank you for posting the website Pam. After a quick peek I am practically drooling on myself over some of the gorgeous fabrics (and prices!) found there. Yum!

I work for a Chinese restaurant, owned by a couple who are from mainland China. I am slowly collecting fabrics to make a quilt for the restaurant (to hang ABOVE the reach of childrens' sweet and sour sticky fingers!) and I have been looking at various patterns done with circles. I am amazed at how circles can give a very oriental feel to the quilt, especially when done in those fabrics and with a sort of wavy (think water moving) quilting pattern.

I look forward to seeing what you do with these fabrics. Your work is wonderful and I am sure it will be a delight to the eyes!

this is my first post but i thought i'd share an asian quilt i'm in the middle of making.

the pic is a little blurry but i think you can get the idea. its not finished yet. i just have to sew the final blocks together.

the corner stones were paper pieced.

all of these fabrics are from the same ebay seller. i've been buying from her for years and she's great.

Funny you should mention that. I was driving home yesterday and thinking of patterns and wondered what would I name an Asian design quilt? I worked in San Francisco for 9 years and Chinatown started right around the corner from my office. I would go for walks at lunch and look at all the cheap touristy shops and of course, great Chinese food. I was thinking about what my impression was of the area and what I thought of was a Chinese food place that I went to all the time. It was good food and a lot of it for like $4.50. People at work called it "Cheap Bob's" I chuckled thinking of naming a quilt "Cheap Bob's". I just might do it. A humble name that doesn't reflect what it really is.

pittsburgpam 04-14-2009 02:53 PM

kluedesigns, that is beautiful! I love the woven corners and the colors. Please keep us posted on the progress, I would love to see more.

Do you mean the same eBay seller, debsews, or that you have bought from the same seller, a different one, for years?

kluedesigns 04-14-2009 03:51 PM

i meant debsews. she's wonderful. when my stock gets low i just email her with my color desires and she puts together a great collection from me.

my last order was $150 for asian blenders and focal fabrics in all color ways. i was so thrilled with the order and i couldn't believe how many FQs she sent me. i would say 98% of her fabrics are from Kona Bay Asian Collections.

i'll keep you posted on the quilt. i'm making a total of 3 of them from now until december for clients.

this one is going to australia -a friend of mine is giving it to her sister as a house warming gift.

youme 04-14-2009 03:56 PM

The asian fabrics sold out side Japan are much prettier than the ones we can get here in Japan. Much more artistic looking.

Now that is surprising to me, and very interesting. Do you normally shop locally (in Japan) or do you order from outside you country when shopping for fabric?

I'm simply going to HAVE to buy some of that Asian fabric. It's simply wonderful! And you ladies like the quality?

kluedesigns 04-14-2009 04:15 PM

i'm very happy with the quality of the fabric from debsews and kona bay. the thread count is high, the colors don't run, and the gold foil doesn't flake off.

Knowing you, by the time we finish making suggestions, you'll have this quilt finished. Can't wait to see it. Have you finished the NY Beauty? I haven't seen the picture with the LC border?

Welcome to the Board - this is the first post I've seen from you, and WHAT A BEAUTY! Plus thanks for the info about debsews on Ebay.

I shop online fom USA, I love Moda fabrics. All I get here for myself is the fabrics for backings or maybe some kids prints.

The next one is for my other daughter, a basket design that she calls purses. It will be awhile until I get to the Asian fabrics but I'm sure I'll have a design in mind by the time I do.

The NY Beauty blocks were used in the corners of a quilt I did years ago. I posted a pic of the finished top with the LC borders in the pictures section a couple of days ago. http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/18896.page
