I got a SW pattern fromSW Decoratives - no directions on piecing only a cutting guide - #1 Background - Section 1 -Make 1
Turquise - Color 1, Rust - color 2- peach -color 3 - multi c4
Color #1 Background #2 Dark Accent #3 Center
Six 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Two 28 1/2" x 1 1/2" One 8 1/2" x 2
Two 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" Eight 4 1/2 x 2
Two 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" Four 6 1/2 x 2

etc. etc. - what do I do? sew these together? - the company was no help whatsoever - they just ask me if I was a beginner, and try my LQS. I've made several quilts from magazines and have not run across this before - HELP

Bobbinwinder 12-20-2009 09:59 AM

Please give us a little more info on the pattern...I checked out SW Decoratives site and there are quite a few patterns pictured for quite a few techniques of piecing. When you contacted the company did they confirm that you had all the pages you were supposed to have? How did you come by the pattern? Is there a chance that you can return it for replacement? There's no doubt that someone here can help with this but you'll really need to give us something more to work with.

Auntie M 12-20-2009 10:20 AM

is there a name to the pattern?

amma 12-20-2009 12:13 PM

We love challenges/puzzles :D:D:D You will get many replies if we can get the info mentioned above

many craft person 12-20-2009 01:45 PM

okay - I sent directly to SW Decoratives - it is named Storm Spirit - and now I see that it says Strip-pieced- The picture of it is small - and so far have been unable to photograph it - I'm pretty sure everything is here - there are 3 patterns for some of the pieces in the quilt, and I guess the rest is strips - there is also a diagram of the quilt with each (section) numbered. I am assuming you start in center and work your way out - I sure hate to buy material though and not have it work the way I am thinking -

Bobbinwinder 12-20-2009 02:05 PM

Okay...I saw the picture on their site...I'd say that some of it is worked in blocks/sections and some of it in strips/stripsets...but what I'd really stress is that there's no way I'd do this one without a Design Wall that's big enough to put most if not all of this up on. I think it will be a striking quilt in Southwest colors.

amma 12-20-2009 02:19 PM

WOW!!! That is a stunning quilt :D:D:D
I can't believe they did not provide better directions for this quilt!!! I agree with Bobbinwinder on having a large enough design wall  That is a lot to keep track of...

This is so interesting.......

I stumbled across this very website recently and bookmarked it to go back and buy the Horse Happy pattern.
Now, I'm wondering if it won't be another one of those indecipherable collections. :(

The pattern you have looks like it will go together in strips and pieces, but you sure do want to have it laid out before putting the whole thing together.
I wonder what you would have received in the kit.

amma 12-20-2009 02:33 PM

Probably nothing more in instructions that what she already received

many craft person 12-20-2009 03:16 PM

probably the same instructions, just has the fabric

Auntie M 12-20-2009 03:31 PM

I'll check with some friends in ABQ that might have gone to see it "in person"

omak 12-20-2009 03:38 PM

I am betting you have gotten a pattern that is not complete ... as in you got the picture on the front, and the cutting directions/supplies on the back, but in the middle of that are the step by steps.
The reason I say this is because I have seen the designers on Simply QUilts and I own a number of their patterns ... call them back and tell them that the pattern is not complete ... I am thinking there are about five type written papers (or more) missing from the plastic bag you received the pattern in.
And, did you buy it from LQS or the company?
see what I am saying?

many craft person 12-20-2009 07:06 PM

I got it from SW Decoratives - It contained 1 sheet with picture of quilt and on back had General Information - Method of Construction which only told how to straighten the fabric
1 sheet that said make 1 section at a time and use diagram and picture on pattern cover
1 template sheet
1 diagram sheet
1 cutting guide that lists the sections with size of strips(but no clue as to what comes first etc. - maybe I am just dense or something, but it is confusing to me

Well, that sounds like everything. Is this the very first thing you have tried? You are probably not dense, just not familiar with the way the people designed their instructions. Keep reading through them and it might start making more sense ... sort of like getting caught in a wave ... if you fight the wave, you will sink, but if you let it carry you, you will reach the shore in time (but, do not rest if you are in an outgoing tide!)
Maybe I need to order the pattern and work through it with you? It is a design I wouldn't mind working on, and if you think I could help you, I would be willing to do that. <wave>

many craft person 12-21-2009 07:30 AM

omak- that is so kind of you, but maybe like you say I'll keep reading through it and maybe it will start making sense. That is the kindest gesture -

Well, sometimes, two heads are better than one, and the pattern is a pretty straight forward design, so it will be a snap for you as soon as you can translate what the designers are trying to impart.

omak 12-21-2009 08:49 AM

Done and done!
The pattern should get here in a few days! I almost ordered the kit, but decided that hubby really didn't need any more fabric to trip over <g>.
Have you heard about the one day mystery on Planet Patchwork set for New Year's Day? (speaking of which I have to cut some fabric to get ready for it  )
Anyway, how about if we set after the New Year for working on this quilt, and who knows? By then, you will have figured it out, eh? <wave>

many craft person 12-21-2009 09:04 AM

no haven't heard about the first one - and yes it would be great to start in January - thanks so much

omak 12-21-2009 09:17 AM

Do you know about bookmarking this thread within this board so you can find your way back here?
I will go find that mystery quilt in a day link so you can see if you would like to play with that <wave>

omak 12-21-2009 09:19 AM

http://planetpatchwork.com/Mystery129/default.htm

follow the links to the cutting and supply page which I highly encourage you to cut fabric ahead, because the day of the mystery is NOT the day to be doing it! <g> (Don't ask how I know ;-) )

many craft person 12-21-2009 09:21 AM

no don't know how to bookmark

omak 12-21-2009 11:09 AM

If you scroll up to the top of this page, on the left hand side, just before the subject line are two boxes ... one says "bookmark" ... if you click on that box, another page will pop up and ask you if you want to bookmark this thread ... then, whenever you want to come to this thread, all you have to do is go to the top of any Quilting Board page and find the link to "my bookmarks" and it will show you any threads you have chosen to keep track of.
Another way we can keep track of each other is through PM ... You PM (private message) anyone by clicking on their name, it will take you to like an identity page and you click on PM and then just type a message, much the same way you reply in the thread. An email will arrive at your personal email, just like a regular thread, click on the link, it will take you to your private message board, click on the email and you can read whatever, and reply much the same way you do in a thread.
I think it is very cleverly managed for benefit of all, the board has many features that "protect" us and guard our privacy as much as we want to be protected (I may not have articulated that well :? but, this is a good site for a number of very good reasons, as I am sure you are discovering.)
I will send you a PM so you can see part of what I am talking about <wave>

omak 12-31-2009 10:02 AM

Just as an update ... I received the pattern, and was hmmm ... shocked seems like such an overstatement, disgusted might not be so harsh ... bewildered!
Bewildered at how incomplete the instructions were.
I got everything, but it would NOT be the first thing I taught a student to produce ... and, the pattern is ... well, for crying outloud!
There are a LOT better ways to write the pattern ... it was about like my chicken scratching when I am taking notes on Quilt in a Day, for just my personal use ...
I am being harsh ... I apologize ... but, we will be working through it together, so I will quit my grousing and start putting things in order for tomorrow's mystery quilt and maybe even get in on a sale at the LQS on Saturday ... sleeping in four hour spurts does cut into one's productivity, but the upside is:
I can take time to think without having those basic daily needs demands interrupting me <g>
Anyone else joining us on this one?
Basically, this thread will be a conversation ... if you want specific measurements, best go order the pattern <g>
the whole thing may end up in a tutorial, but at this point, it is just a conversation about an intricate pattern that will be beautiful, once all the pieces get put together (and, totally out of my comfort zone - - but, hey! This is how I learn ;-)

Omak, you are so helpful to people on here. Just wanted to say thank you.

okay! So crafty is way ahead of me on this pattern, but, last night I actually had to get into this .. of course, I immediately start double guessing the colors I had chosen - - you KNOW I went shopping on the fly - - the pattern was safely stored on the supply wall in the bunkhouse ... so, I was out there winging it. So, here are pictures of section seven, lined up with section 6 ... the question is: Where does the 2.5 x 10.5 strip go?
In this picture, you will see that it had to be sewn on to the LEFT side of the top section, before adding the bottom section, before you can add section 6.
I haven't ironed a thing, and if it shows up here and needs to be separated a bit, or something, I will get it. in the meantime:

the lower right corner of section 6 has flipped up

the strip in question is in the top half of section 7

Hopefully, this will show the section better.
I highly recommend that everyone IRON ... do not do as I do, but trust me when I tell you it is BETTER!
Too long working in a factory - - is that a good excuse??? LOL

The piece in question is in the upper right portion of the picture. Lighting in the old bunkhouse leaves a little to be desired, so I had to change my position.
If there is another way I can show the pieces and the issue, suggestions gladly accepted <g> <wave>

many craft person 01-13-2010 11:49 AM

thanks I think I have it now

omak 01-13-2010 11:58 AM

I just finished cutting out section one ... MAN!
These people did NOT do anyone any favors with their instructions .... wahhhhhh .... I HATE having to think every step of the way! Even if I AM having fun! LOL
So, now for the viewing public (which may or may not exist <g>) I will upload a picture of section 1 ... <wave>

Pretty hard to do when I hadn't even transferred it from the camera, eh?
(May I just comment on how impressed I am with the color selection? It actually looks like I knew what I was doing! What a surprise! LOL)
I am looking at that angled border ... I think we ought to learn how to use our rulers to cut that puppy! What say you, crafty?

section 1 - the dark border - - no room on the table!

omak 01-13-2010 12:03 PM

the triangles on the very outside border (thinking ahead <g>)
that is what I was referencing with that last question. <wave>

many craft person 01-13-2010 02:14 PM

okay - I'm a gonna try it. If this works I'll send you some chocolate

omak 01-13-2010 04:17 PM

If it works, because it will - - I PROVED it <g>
forget the chocolate, just call me MASTER!!! HAH!
that won't work, cuz you ain't "little grasshopper"
bet you don't know Kung Fu, do you? LOL (I am trying to think if that was the name of that program ... David Carradine ... Oriental Kung Fu training ... traveling all over the West in the old days ... was that the name??? I didn't like the program, but I know some lines - - <g> go figure! LOL)
I am sooooo old
ah, well ... I have a good humor, and that counts for something, right??? LOL

omak 01-13-2010 05:21 PM

AHHHHHHH>>>>>>>> *screaming*
what the pattern NEGLECTED to say or show ... but, which my husband lovingly pointed out ....
Section 7 is two images MIRRORED ...
Will show you in seven hours, when I get done feeding cattle, hubby, changing laundry to dryer AND finish ripping out two whole block ...
Bummer!

many craft person 01-13-2010 05:31 PM

Ah MASTER just like you say - it worked. I never would have gotten it without your pictures. I kept trying to get the dark bar in the center of the thingy.

omak 01-13-2010 10:22 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Yes! I have noticed that their drawings are not to scale, either.
Here is my section 1 ... thankfully, hubby had discovered that mirror image thing before I had gotten THAT together, too! <whew!>

omak 01-13-2010 10:25 PM

You DID get my message about the mirror image thing, right?
I guess you can drop the MASTER thing, since you have been struggling with that all along!
Now, I am working on Section 2 ... I have multiplied all of the cuts as they said, and I have run out of pieces! GRRRR ...
I am forming a letter to that company ... now, I am wondering if I have EVER actually opened up those patterns I have purchased from them YEARS ago! (I do that alot! )
Bless your heart! You have done so well, and gotten so far WITHOUT any help from me! ... you need to give yourself some HUGS! LOL <wave>

omak 01-14-2010 09:30 AM

So, now I am working on Section 4 ... should be straight forward, except for this little thing where they want us to use a template they have provided ... well, golly gee!
They want me to cut FOUR x 2 ... so, I see a square on the drawing ... didn't understand they were referring to a template when the instructions said: Four - C
I looked at the little drawing, looked at the picture, figured out that I needed a HST on the end of a couple of pieces, so I cut some more squares because it looks to me like they want me to do that technique ... well, they didn't!
So, I look at the template and think ... bummer! Why, in this day and age did they have me do a template, when they could have done the x-measurement, draw diagonal line, sew .25" from drawn line, both sides???
and, I just want to tell my young partner in crime here ...
You have done GOOD!
As everyone can see by the pictures of the sections I am taking the pattern is pretty straight forward ... but the instructions were created somewhere WAAAYYY south of where I intend to be headed ...
ah, well ... back to the machines for section 4.
Partner! SALUTE !
