I buy quite often from a quilt shop in states I have never paid duty yet or PST or GST.A few times I have asked to send as gift they have no problem doing that.I also shop in Port Huron and have yet to pay duty there either.

One of my favorite Canadian shops is Sew Sisters. They have a store in Toronto as well as an online store and an ebay store. They're just great to deal with, and their prices are excellent.

Here's a link to the store. http://www.sew-sisters.com/

Thanks for the link, twisted stitcher, I checked it out. I had no idea there were so many Canadian online fabric stores. Choices, choices... :D

I order most of my fabric from the States. I have paid duty on some, but it seems to be hit and miss. I have had orders of 22 yards of fabric come through with no duty, yet had patterns come across and have had to pay duty. I bought my Pfaff sewing machine and it came across with 80 dollars duty owing on it, which was a lot less than I expected because I've paid 30 dollars on six yards of fabric.

I have had parcels of fabric opened by customs and no duty charged, then had duty charged on parcels that weren't opened...hard to figure out. So I am beginning to think it all depends on the mood of the customs officer.

Ok, heres a hint from someone who works with duty, taxes, and all that wonderful stuff.

If the Fabric is MADE IN THE U.S.A. You should NOT be paying duty. (its called NAFTA)

Once step is have the store you are buying it from or person your getting it from mark on the Invoice, and also on any Custom Forms that it is made in the USA

This makes it easier for CCRA

Hope this Helps
