I would use a white on black print, maybe with some red in it.
Or a red on white might look nice. Is it for a male or female? For a male I might go with blue and black. Also depending on how much black is in the quilt, you may want to consider black batting.
Do you have a picture of the top? That may help with suggestions!

I would use black and white material for the back, or maybe something colorful.

I'm in the process of a black and white quilt and have black with sage green, pink and yellow hearts on it for the backing of it. The top is strictly black and white, but , I wanted to add a little colour.

Red is always nice with black

I agree with a red.

I have been making several bags/totes/purses. My husband looked at all of them last night - he LOVES the insides because some of them have such a contrast - he thinks contrast is great - maybe something really bright!?

I made my DD#1 a black/red/white quilt and will be using a black tone on tone backing. I will probably quilt it with read thread so that it shows up on the back, just and idea.

I say shock em!!! Use something bright and bold. The back is not seen unless they choose to do so! Just my thought.

I was thinking black and white, but after reading dakotamaid, I have agree with her. Now I am picturing one of the large, bold, and bright prints that I like and never know what to do with. I don't have one, but will now be looking for one on sale and buy it for a backing.
