Backing question
 

I'm just starting to sew together the backing for a quilt top that I just finished. Does anyone starch the backing? I want to iron all the creases out of the material but can't decide if I should steam them out or Best Press them out. I used Best Press when I made the top.

I starch my backing just like I starch fabrics before I cut out pieces for my blocks. That way when I put it together to quilt, its all nice & smooth, and much less likely to have any puckers.

I heavily starch the backing. It prevents the fabric from puckering or folding over itself while machine quilting.

I starch all my fabrics before cutting. I use steam, starch, whatever to get the wrinkles out and go from there. Doesn't matter if it's for the front or the back.

I don't usually starch my backing if the quilt is going to be washed. I just press it nice and then quilt it. As long as it doesn't have any major creases that need removed. Now if it's a wall hanging I might starch it to keep it nice and smooth and flat. :)

I agree starching the back helps keep it smooth with out wrinkles.

Prism99 never thought about starching the back for this reason. Will do from today.

Good idea to starch even if you plan to wash it afterwards. Keeps it flat while quilting. I also use a 1/2" seam allowance on the backing fabric and starch the seams open and flat to help with quilting over them. Unless it's flannel, minkee or fleece - still do the 1/2" seam allowance but use spray basting on the seams (underside) then press them open/flat with my fingers - don't like quilting over a lot of thickness on the backing.
