HI everyone, I was thinking of doing a Bali pop quilt, but I'd like to do one in a queen size. Most of the patterns I've seen that are just for Bali pops are for smaller sized quilts. Will one bali pop do a queen sized top (without borders) or will I need two, and are jelly roll strips the same width, in case I want to use a jelly roll quilt pattern?
Thanks!
Evelyn

I imagine that for a quilt that big you will need 2 along with a background fabric.

I'm pretty sure you will need two. Better too much than not enough.

My LQS told me to buy two packages for a Queen, so I did :D

Thanks everyone, I think I will buy two. I also bought a Strip Therapy 3 book yesterday, we will see how it works out Lol!

I recently used one and had to add some of my own fabrics to make the top come out to approximately 60 X 80 so buying 2 packs should provide you with enough for a queen size quilt. May in Jersey

I bought two when I got mine - but haven't gotten to it yet - my question is: since the dyes are so vibrant . . do you prewash first? if you use a color catcher or two - can you do them all together - or does that defeat the purpose of pre-washing??

you can't wash them once they are cut...you can, but then some might shrink more than others, etc...and you would have a mess to iron and recut...

what you can do if you are afraid some might bleed is this..take a clean white cloth or tissue and rub across the fabric..if dye comes off onto the cloth, then pull that one out...

but I would honestly just sew the top and then wash it with a dye catcher or two!

I never prewash any of my fabrics........

Just curious, I never wash any of my fabric first either. Have you used batiks and not wash them first. I finally bought some and have not used them because of this. Can I get by without washing them first, or would that be a total disaster

jaciqltznok 06-28-2011 05:55 PM

I prewash everything BUT batiks...I have never had any of them bleed, but some say they have had even the best ones bleed!

BellaBoo 06-28-2011 06:01 PM

You will only wash a bunch of strips once. Then you will know better. LOL.

The last few bali pops I bought the strips were all cut accurately and none bleed. I buy two or three packages for a large quilt.

I'm in the process of making a bali pop quilt, mine will hopefully measure 60" x 70/80" and there wasn't enough for that size had to go and buy another yard of fabric. I'm doing it in a brick pattern it'll look cool when it's done if it turns out!

EvieD44 06-29-2011 03:58 AM

I usually make my quilts for other people and never wash
them, I've always been told to never wash the fabrics
before and that asvise is from experienced quilters, one of whom designs her own fabrics. Do you have to wash it??

EvieD44 06-29-2011 04:02 AM

Well I don't know where my last reply went, I'm not
used to this, just started actually talking on this yesterday!

Never have pre-washed - but with some of the horror stories on here about deeply dyed batiks bleeding. . . I was concerned. thanks for the ifo - I will proceed as usual !!
