Bargello
 

I love these quilts, but they look SOOOO difficult to make. I have seen the pictures of the beautiful ones board members have made. How hard are they to make? I have been quilting for a little over two years. I guess I would consider myself an "advanced beginner" :)

I've made quite a few bargello quilts and they are not hard, but you do have to pay strict attention and make sure you sew the strips in exactly the same order. I bought a couple of books, one easy to understand and one I still don't understand. I made a sample quilt before I started on the one you see pictured here. This was the second bargello I ever did and I designed the king size from a wall hanging pattern I found in a magazine. I recently bought the fabric to make a wave bargello for our bedroom. I made one, there is a pattern for newbies that I followed where all strips were the same.

if you pick a simple one they arent hard at all one off my first quilts was a bargello. ive made two so far and am working on a third right now.

I made one using only a Billie Lauder video posted on Quilter's TV. It turned out well. I think the hardest part is fabric choice

I just printed a very easy-looking bargello pattern from the www.clothworkstextiles.com site. It doesn't have varying widths of strips and it is just a zigzag. But it gives an idea about how they're laid out. Might be worth a look.

They are easier than they look. I put off doing one for years. I just could not wrap my brain around sewing strips into a tube .. and then unsewing/taking stitches out . Once I did my first one , and yes the first few strips where a brain challenge... I loved it. The sewing was the easy part.
Just take it slow till your brain adjusts to the new method. Stay organized ! I have a large bulletin board I use for my strips sets. It helps to keep them organized and going in the right direction.
Try a lap size for your first one. Its a great method! Make this a New Years resolution!

I recently finished a bargello for my daughter ( http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...g-t157075.html ) and had a great time with it. It required 24 different fabrics which was the hardest and most time consuming process. I don't think it would be that difficult for you, just take your time with the fabrics (small prints work better) and make a small project such as a table runner first (I made two) to perfect the different techniques required for a bargello. The actual construction was pretty fast....I think it took longer to make the strip sets than anything else. I also numbered each fabric in order and tacked it on the wall in front of my sewing machine for easy reference...you will be checking it often. I also didn't cut strips ahead of what I needed for the next 2 or 3 and it saved me lots of confusion. Those are just a couple of my tips....there are more if you decide you want to make one. Give it a go....you will be happy you did!
