Barn Blocks?
 

My sil wants to paint a few for her shows and then take orders.
How big are they 4ft by 4ft?If you just want to put on a fench or deck do you make them smaller?
How much would you pay.

I'm wanting to put one on the end of my studio facing the driveway. I'm thinking 4 ft x 4 ft would be about right. Not sure about price, as I'm planning to do mine myself as soon as I figure out what block I want.

An excellent question for our QB members, how much does one pay for a barn (or end of shed) quilt block? Or have all of you done ti yourself or had a husband to do it for you.

Barn blocks are a big thing here in TN, KY, and GA. Those are the ones that I personally have seen. I have just had one painted and placed on our barn, 8x8 (but our house is a good ways off the road), my choice for colors and design (I had Patriotic Star, done in red, white, and blue honoring the military members of my own family), and the price was $300, plus the wood (two 4x8 sheets of a certain grade and thickness of plywood) and the paint. I love it. Our quilting trail is on the internet and when I get info on how to tell you, I'll post it.

Barns tend to be very large, and the quilt blocks need to be seen from a distance. I think most of them are community projects, not purchased by individuals.

I've seen them anywhere from 4 x 4' to 8 x 8'. From what I've read they are either painted right onto the barn/house/shed or onto panels of 3/4" exterior grade plywood- primed, painted, and sometimes clear poly on top. Be aware- poly can yellow over time. Some are mounted directly to the building, some slide into brackets so they can be changed. Making one is on my "someday" list. You can research the process in more detail on the net, including pricing. A few years ago I saw prices of $200 on up, sometimes including mounting, sometimes not. They are Heavy! There's a Barn Trail in Neversink, NY that's on my bucket list.

I made mine and it is 3' X 3'. I have a smaller "barn" so any bigger would not be proportion would not be appropriate for my barn. I did use marine grade plywood (its expensive) so it wouldn't rot out in the lovely NY weather.

My dh and I made a 4x4 block (Ohio Star) for a friend at Christmas. Cost was minimal. We went to Home Depot, using their color cards, chose the colors and had them make the sample bottles up (2.59 each), we had paint left over, at least half of the sample tubs. It was a fun project. My husband put finish trim around it which we painted black.
