When I was watching the quilting show last week, the woman was making blocks using a very basic strip pattern. This is why I thought it would be easy. :lol:

ANyway, I can't seem to find one like that. All the patterns I've found have triangles and/or circles in them.

Does anyone know of a very basic strip pattern that I could us my first time out?

By "strip pattern", I mean she used strips of fabric that were 2.5in (or so) wide by various lengths to make the block. Not sure if I'm using the proper terminology. :oops:

Try the Split Rail. That is usually 3 or 4 strips about 2-4 inches going horizonal, then the same amount going vertical.
I know there's another name for the square.

Have you been on quilterscache site...or quiltbus they have hundreds of blocks, and I am sure there is alot of beginners blocks catered for...have a look :D

i love the log cabin, it is made with strips.
you can get books at the library, the price is right :wink:
if your library has eleanor burns' book on log cabin quilts i would suggest you borrow it. it was my first quilt. i have made several since, when i need a quick quilt it is the way to go.

Eleanor Burns has a book out called Still Stripping After 25 Years - 16 quilts using 2.5" strips. She also has programs on www.quilterstv.com (any of the programs in the 2500 series are companions to this book.) Being new at quilting, I love having the book and the programs together as references - it really helps. I got the book at either Joann Fabrics or Hobby Lobby - I know I used a 40% off coupon on it.

I have done the 9 Patch and Stripes (http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/6285.page) and the Quarter Log Cabin (http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/6707.page) from the book and recommend it.

The easiest pattern I have ever made uses 2x 3 1/2 inch pieces cut from 2 inch strips. It is beautiful when made with all batik fabrics.
The pattern is called Spectrum by Judy Turner. No seams to match and is a 6 1/2 inch block made like a log cabin with just one row outside the center. It chains togather very easy, I have 25 blocks going at once.

An irish chain or a nine patch works great with strip quilting

Log cabin's are very versitile and very easy. It was the 2nd quilt I made (the first was a fence rail).

I just watched a Sewing With Nancy show on QNN that has the best idea for a quilt.
Its in the series 1700 and it is called Scrap Happy Piecework.
Im so impressed that Im dropping every other project to make one.
I have searched for the book but it seems to be out of print.
It is all strips in various sizes cut to make six inch blocks put togather to make 12 inch blocks. Using 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 - 3 1/2- 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 strips then cutting each to combine into 6 1/2 inch blocks.
Be sure and watch it if you have QNN.

I'm actually doing a quilt with strips of various lengths: 8", 10" 16" 20" and 22". I'm randomly sewing one of each together until I get the width that I want. Then I will put on a "piano Keys" border. It's been fun. I'm using Debbie Mumm fabric with sewing themes.

Moonhoney2 I found a really nice pattern on the internet (I don't remember where). It's called Bricks and stepping Stones. It's made up of four-patches and rectangles - no corners to match.

I downloaded it into a word document. Pictures and all. Try searching for the pattern name. You should find it with no problem. Would make a great first quilt. :)

The square you are looking for is called the rail fence. easy pattern.
