Batiqs and Bargello
 

I am off to Intercourse, PA. Thank you all for the suggestions of what stores visit. I will see them all. Last night a got a call from a friend for whom I am making a Bargello quilt (my first) and she asked me if I can buy all the fabrics for it. She would prefer that they are all Batiqs in blue shades. She is giving me all the freedom in selecting fabric. My question is, would Bargello look odd done only in Batiqs? Should I throw in some other fabrics? She knows nothing about sewing or quilting but she feels very strongly about Batiqs. Help!

Batiks work very well in Bargello patterns. In fact are a favorite of mine for bargello quilts.

Batiks are wonderful for a bargello, they give that extra movement which is what the aim is. Lucky you! Lori, that is beautiful!

many beautiful bargello's have been made with batiks...they are the perfect choice.

Batiks are my preferred fabric choice for Bargello. The batiks without resist printing are perfect for blending and the batiks with resist printing lend great texture. I would avoid batiks that have a large color variance though as you won't be able to plan if the purple dyed section will end up in the green section.

That said ... if you find a great print that will work ... don't be afraid to use it with the batiks. The prints can lend great texture to the overall outcome.

The best thing about using batiks though is the thread count - it absorbs more starch and makes the fabric nice and crisp and much easier to work those wonderful narrow strips that some bargello use.

My avatar is using 99% batiks. The black at the bottom is a screen print and the color immediately above it. The borders are also screen print. The remainder are all batiks ... some with and some without resist print.

Personally I like to mix solids with batiks, I think it makes the batiks stand out a bit more...but maybe that's not what you want in your bargello! I've finished one and am working on a second bargello and I mixed batiks, solids and prints in both of them. But I also tend to like really scrappy looking quilts.

This isn't a very helpful post, is it? LOL I think there's no wrong way to do it - if you find the right batiks to give you the colorway you're looking for, I think you're all set!

All batiks make a beautiful bargello, in my eyes. Do what YOU think looks best.

Batiks have such a range in choices, from reads like solid thru to large prints.
As mentioned you may need to watch those with great colour variations, as it could destroy your colour placements.

If your friend wants all batiks, providing you have a good assortment to choose from, you should be able to create the whole quilt with batiks. That being said, of course, we do not know which bargello pattern you will be using, and thus, it may change the whole scenario.
