Batting scissors
 

Does any have/use batting scissors? I saw a couple of pairs at a show and I've been thinking about them ever since. It seems like it would make cutting the batting easier but I'm not sure if it would be easy enough to justify the cost. Here are the pairs that I've been looking at:

I did notice on a video that the Linda Taylor ones can be used to trim a quilt as well. I'm not sure if that can be done with the Handiquilter ones as well.

Anyone have experience with these tools?

I have a pair I love for cutting batting. They were my mothers and were originally for doing upholstery. When she passed away they came to me. Compare something like this before making your choice. I also use them for trimming excess batting and backing after quilting.

I'm sorry but they just look like another quilting gaget that will take up room and cost money that I could be using for fabric. I use my grand mothers old dress maker shears , 12 inch blade, weighted for a balance, over 90 years old and still keeping a sharp edge.

I never heard of batting scissors. I just use my old faithful Ginghers and they work fine.

I have a pair so I can give a first hand review. I bought them at Quilt in a Day. I thought my Ginghers were fine for cutting batting until I used the batting scissors. What a difference! The handles are completely out of the way of the batting so no stops while cutting. My cuts are straighter. I can cut several layers at one time. The scissors are a must if you cut lofty batting. Sure any of my other scissors will cut batting but why not use the better tool for the job.

Thanks, BellaBoo. That is pretty much the review I was hoping for. I use wool batting which has more loft than W&N and it is not as easy to get nice straight cuts. I definitely think these scissors will help.

I use my 60mm rotary cutter.

I got these at Harborfreight - $3.99 - they work great. If I used them a lot I might want "better" scissors, but for the little use they get I'm very happy with them. http://www.harborfreight.com/14-inch...ors-90609.html

I use my rotary cutter. Seems like just another way to get your money.

$35.00 for a pair of scissors with 'fancy' handles? Seems like a good start on a new quilt to me. I've never had a problem seeing what ever I'm cutting with scissors-just keep my eyes open!

I paid more then $35 so that is a great price for them. I've had mine for several years and I would buy them again.

like many of the quilting (gadgets) on the market- they are very useful/wonderful for those who choose to spend the money & try them out- for some they just seem like- what i use now works fine....
if you cut alot of batting-they are well worth the money! if you only occassionally cut batting then, maybe they would not get used very often- I don't think $35 is at all unreasonable for new scissors- since i have little embroidery shears that cost more than that- I purchase batting by the bolt & used to struggle with rotory cutters, sewing scissors, ect...all of which did (work) but the batting scissors are a dream come true in my world!
just like i paper pieced for years without a 1/4" ruler- finally got one (someone gave me one as a gift) and now i wonder why i waited so long to spend that $7! i love it & love paper piecing all the more because of it...it was not a necessity- but it sure makes the job more pleasurable.
the batting scissors don't catch on the bottom of the batting- or snag it- i'm no longer dulling my rotory blades on batting...well worth the money :)

hey, the harbor freight ones look great. I too use a cheap pair of scissors to cut batting. perhaps better ones would be important to a long arm quilter who might buy batting by the rolls. but not for me.

I have the Handi Quilter batting scissors and absolutely love them!!! It makes cutting batting like butter. The extra length makes it faster too!

My friend talked me into getting Linda Taylor's batting scissors and I have been thanking her ever since.

I am going to pass on these at that price. I'm beginning to think that the companies that market items believe we, quilters, are willing to pay high prices for our gadgets. $35 for a pair of scissors to cut batting is extremely high. I'll stick to my rotary cutter and ruler.

I was given the Handquilters ones and really like them. I would not have bought them however. A regular big pair of scissors worked fine before I had these. If money is not an issue---buy them.

Is it the length of the blade or the position of the handles or a combination of both that make it 'easier' to cut batting?

I do not have a pair and have never tried them. Because I longarm quilt, I use my 'not too sharp any more' fabric scissors to cut batting from bolts and square up one side with a ruler and rotary cutter. Every time I cut with scissors I think about Batting Scissors...but within 1 minute I'm done and never think about Batting Scissors again.

I agree gadgets are addicting, manufacturers know that and think we'll pay...until we find it at the hardware store for less! Hahaha! Love the hardware stores for quilting items!

A friend came over this morning to cut batting squares and used my batting scissors. She raved with every cut how great they were. She had me order her a pair online (I get free shipping) before she left and then called me and said order her mom a pair too.

I have batting scissors and use only wool batting. I love the scissors. I use to use my rotary cutter, which was a hassle. Now, it's so easy and mess free. I would buy them!! They are worth the money. So what if you could spend the money on fabric? You'll have these scissors for life! And you will use them for every quilt you make.

I have a Fiskcars spring action long scissors that I use for batting, I did pay around $20. about 8 yrs ago. I like the long blades that don't get stuck on the batting

Interesting looking scissors.

aren't the tips of batting scissors blunted so they don't catch in the bat? I think that is part of the uniqueness. I'd really like a pair but struggle with forking over that amount.

Polyester batting is hard on good scissors, as is fleece. When I worked at JoAnn's we had scissors set aside with ribbons on the handles just for fleece.

I have these scissors and would buy them again. Perfect for cutting many layers of batting for squares or strips. I think I paid about $40 for mine some years ago. Never thought not to buy them when I got to try them at the quilt shop.
