to this..

i still have a stack in my sewing room..but if i don't take care of this mess, i will continue to go buy batting, instead of using up what i have..

the narrow ones, scarfs for the homeless shelter, just put flannel on front and back. (stitch and flip style)

mug rugs and small projects, and baby quilts..

just zig zag them together..

lisainmo 09-19-2011 05:01 AM

WOW Do you want to come and do mine too?? I need to do the same thing!! Thanks for the motivation. :)

Chicca 09-19-2011 05:38 AM

Great inspiration! I am currently organizing all of my fabrics...now batting is on that list. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Geta 09-19-2011 05:46 AM

Wow, you are so organized! So clever to add the measurements! Thanks for the idea! It's so easy to do this after every project.

the width measurements are just so i know what i need to get it to a certain size...

as for the lengths, well, i can easily join them together as i need them for the length.

i got one crib size finished already. 45" x 60".

i use the SITD foot..and a zig zag.

finished 1, 45 x 60!

Beachbound 09-19-2011 06:12 AM

Great idea! it's nice to know what we have :)

ontheriver 09-19-2011 06:12 AM

I always piece my batting scraps together and use them for smaller projects. I can't afford to waste them.

sewwhat85 09-19-2011 06:16 AM

what a great idea

CarrieAnne 09-19-2011 06:19 AM

Great idea!

Charleen DiSante 09-19-2011 06:24 AM

Great ideas, I see you had some help flattening that piece on your bed. Question: how wide do you generally make the scarves?

Thats is a great idea. I have a whole tub of the same thing. I know what Im going to do after I finish this quilt in process. thanks for sharing.

SharonTheriault 09-19-2011 09:06 AM

Now I know what to do with those containers of batting scraps I won't give up. The LQS is selling bags of batting scraps too so if mine don't make the size I need, I'll just go get some of hers. Great idea

ghquilter53 09-20-2011 03:41 AM

Thank you tons for sharing. I need to get started doing this. I have been much better at using the fusible tape to put smaller batting pieces together....fast and easy.

watterstide 09-20-2011 03:51 AM

haven't tried the tape, if Joanns was to sell it and i could use a coupon,i may try it..but never had a problem with the way i do it..the bigger pieces i had, i squared them up,and put them back away, for table toppers, or other projects.i got a lot done with the batting yesterday..so happy!

Okay, now you have given me something else I need to do "in there"! Being a longarm quilter, I always have a strip left over at the end (if I am lucky) and the customer never wants it. I pile it in a corner and now my corner is about 6 feet high.
As for those times when there isn't enough batting at the end of a quilt...the tape works great! I grab a slice of batting from my corner and fuse two together....not sure how I made it before the fusing tape...it was a nightmare. I bought a cordless steam iron and that has also made fusing the tape to the batting a real breeze.
I love organization, and I love organized people....I just wish I were one!

Yep, just what I do with my leftovers--I seem to use them up especially on charity quilts. Can aford to make them this way.

watterstide 09-20-2011 04:22 AM

i also used up a bunch of half used bobbins while doing this!

weasier22 09-20-2011 04:44 AM

Thanks for sharing ... great idea!

EdieClay 09-20-2011 04:48 AM

Great idea. I keep the remnants when I trim up a quilt that I get back from the long-arm quilter. I use the remnants to practice FMQ.

DianneK 09-20-2011 04:49 AM

that's what I do with my leftovers...I am a longarmer, so I gets lots of scraps...to expensive to ust toss aside!!

dunster 09-20-2011 04:56 AM

You can also cut leftover lightweight fusible into strips and use it instead of the tape.

I'm very impressed with how organized you are. I save my batting pieces also, larger pieces in one place and smaller bits in another, but I never seem to do anything with the smaller bits. I make mostly large quilts, and buy 90" W&N on the bolt, so almost always have to add something to get to the size I need. I wish JoAnn's sold wider W&N on the bolt!

Fabaddict 09-20-2011 05:10 AM

my theory is I pay lots of good $$ for it, I am gonna use it. in quilts, pillows, small things, you name it. but anyway you look at it, it doesn't go to waste.

Scakes 09-20-2011 05:43 AM

Come on over and we can do mine too.

I like the idea of the scarves out of flannel. May do that with some of my scraps and send them to Pine Ridge in the next box I send out.

cjaye44 09-20-2011 06:04 AM

I did the same thing yesterday...measured, folded and labeled all my odds and ends of batting. The smaller ones I zig-zagged together for potholders and coasters. Sure made a difference in the wire basket I use for that! I was pleasantly surprised at the number that could be used for baby quilts and my doll/mini quilts. I had been using my JoAnn coupons and getting 5 yards of Warm and Natural at a time when I had a little extra money. I had bags scattered here and there!! So I got one of those tubes that decorator fabric is rolled on....rolled on all the batting, covered it with an extra long pillowcase made of muslin and now it stands behind the door, ready when I need it.

BuzzinBumble 09-20-2011 06:24 AM

Very nice and a smart way to get organized Kim!

ajohn52 09-20-2011 06:32 AM

I need to do the same with my scraps. I also just zig zag them together. Good idea for the skinny pieces for scarves for the homeless!! Good way to use left over flannel too!!

Kath12 09-20-2011 06:34 AM

Wow I'm impressed!
