Is there such a thing as DOWN like batting? I'm making a quilt for my dd and she asked if I could make it a down quilt.

what about making a duvet cover for a down comforter?

I haven't seen "down" batting. Have you done a search online? Wool batting is light and fluffy!! and very warm. It is a lot lighter weight than warm and natural and quilts beautifully.

since down is feathers----
you could purchase a down pillowtop- and use it inside a tied quilt- it would be very difficult to actually quilt it.

This would be the route I'd take as well. Also keep in mind how often the quilt would need to be washed. I'd be inclined to make as a duvet cover that can be removed rather than try to quilt the down. Down expands exponentially in a dryer if it escapes the pillow or whatever was supposed to contain it. And depending on the weave of the fabric, it can escape multiple layers. While the dryer repair person may enjoy a good laugh as they unclog a machine, the rest of us might get a little frustrated.

Hi and welcome to the board from Iowa. I don't know about down batting, but I made a down coat once and the down cam e in tubes. I had to order it off the web. You sewed sections in the coat fabric and the tube of down just popped in. You cut the package away and sewed the end shut. Went fine.

Has any one ever tried using a comforter instead of batting for a quilt then tied it rather than quilt it?

I would use thinsulate. Not the lightweight kind, the kind that goes in jackets. I used it in winter jackets and I have made sleeping bags(that quilted beautifully) for my grandchildren. The number 150wt(years since I bought a bunch of it) seems to ring a bell. I plan on ordering more this winter from the US. It is $20-22 a meter here at Fabricland for stuff so light there is not even a refernce number on it. I plan on making a quilt for my son who has an extreme case of fybromyalgia and needs warmth at times.
