batting in washer?
 

I bought some batting and it was on top of a rubber maid container...and my cat peed on the container and now the batting that was in a closed bag smells like pee....can I put the batting in the washer? Darn cat must have gotten locked in the room....

My suggestion would be to get rid of the batting and start over. Cat urine is one odor that NEVER goes away no matter what you do.

Well batting is washable so I would try it but do it on delicate or in a mesh bag. Nothing tried nothing gained.

i preshrink all my cotton batting and the poly is no problem at all...i put the cotton (unfolded but in a large bag made from a twin sheet, folded in half from top to bottom and sewn on three sides. i put batting in and then baste the 4th side with the longest st i can and with the top tension loosened 1 or 2 numbers...this way the bobbin thread pulls out in seconds and then the top thread does the same.... i keep the bag, of course...all cotton batts need to be shrunk...the cat orders can be helped by using oxyclean and/or borax...

Use vinegar in the wash along with detergent and this should help remove the smell. You may need to let it soak awhile to really get it to work. Good Luck and let us know how these suggestion works out.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.....I did wash it and it survived the washer which is a good thing....I put new Downy unstopables in the washer with it...I put twice as much in...all laundry detergent...and softner....it is in the dyer now....I am hoping that the smell is gone....I think was saved me most is that it was still in the plastic bag...and the cat did not pee directly on it....so I may have lucked out there....we shall see when it comes out of the dryer....

I hope the smell is gone!! What really works on cat urine is a product called Nature's Miracle. It works by enzyme action not just a fragrance cover up. You saturate the areas where the urine is and let it air dry. I had to use this on my new furniture when my cat sprayed on it. It sure does work!!!
The big thing with pet odors is that we may not be able to smell it but our pet can---so the odor must be ALL gone or they will go back to that same spot again.

I would put it in a mesh bag and use vinegar in the wash; it really helps. If that doesn't work a friend of mine said the carpet cleaner that is for pee works; she used it in the wash with a throw rug. I have an old cat and she has issues once in a while so I keep a large gallon of vinegar on hand at all times. I use cider vinegar since I like it for food as well but white would also work.

I totally agree. I had to throw away a hamper for the same reason. I hated to throw it away but hated the smell even more. Now that it's gone I have no more problems.

Use the delicate cycle. Soak it for awhile using "Nature's Miracle". I really like that stuff. We used it a lot when we had an old cat who had difficulty 'holding' it due to illness. Nature's miracle can be bought in varying sizes at places like Petco. However, it's up to you. Perhaps the cost of the product is more than you want to spend to reclaim this batting. I always have the stuff available, so I wouldn't think twice about using it.
