What about a cheater panel? she would need a minimum of supplies to try one of them. Thats how I got started er Hooked! Prayers for your family too.

I agree that the embroidery would be nice. My MIL makes lots of quilts out of embroidered blocks. Most of her quilts are embroidered. I started embroidering some of the quilt blocks my MIL got me before I had my first child (she's 6 now). It goes at a nice pace...if you work on it and stay with it. You can find them on eBay. She may only need one set, if she puts a sashing through them later on and depending on the desired quilt size.
You could cheer her up by sending the blocks, some embroidery thread to work on them with, a new pack of needles, and a little pair of scissors, and maybe a new hoop if she doesn't have one or doesn't have a good one.
