Bernina machine to use for classes ?

I have a Bernina 730E machine that I love but it is so heavy that I hate taking it to classes. Wondering what Bernina machine quilters would recommend for a class machine?

I have a Bernina 1260 that I take to some classes. I paid $450 for it with all accessories from a shop that took it in trade and sells the trade ins for what the actual value is. They have a book and I saw the trade in values listed of all Bernina models. You may want to find a small size Bernina that uses the same feet as the one you have. That will save a lot of money. The accessories are usually worth more then the used machine.

Yeah, I'm with you. I wouldn't take that 730E to class either. I kept my eyes open and finally got a vintage Bernina for use outside the house. It's an 801Sport from the 1980s. One of my Quilt of Valor buddies noticed right away how quiet it is. You might also look for a MiniMatic or a Favorit, depending on how old you are willing to go. Because they are Berninas, they are great machines and because they are mechanical, they are easy to maintain. Bernina also makes a modern mechanical machine, the 1008, but I'm not sure it comes with a nifty handle. It's an entry level machine, but it has lots of features. At my store they run around $700.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

I have a Bernina 830, but my travel machine is a 1530 that I purchased new in 1997. It is a workhorse and I still prefer it for some of my sewing!!!!!!!

Depends on what you need for the class. A good basic machine i.e. straight stitch, no computerized/electronic features is the Bernina Bernette 46.I have had mine for a year or so now and find it does the basic sewing for a piecing class just fine. I have recently purchased the Bernina 380 which is the top of the line of the 300 series ---it has the bells and whistles I wanted in my price range. I have ordered the straight stitch plate for use with my organdies and chiffons as well as quilting. I have a problem with the chewing of edges --- note I said I have the problem not the Bernina! LOL This machine has fun decorative stitches. I have used one at my dealer's shop in classes which helped me decide on the purchase.

Does it have to be a Bernina? If you are wanting it for piecing (straight stitching) in class, you can find something lighter than one of the Berninas, i.e. Janome GEM, Feather Weight. If you are wanting to stick with a Bernina, I would mention to your dealer what you are looking for and have them keep an eye out for a good used one.
