My friend just gave me her mother's Bernina Record 930 Electronic and I need some information about it. Does anyone have one? It sew beautifully but makes an sound when you are starting or stopping, like something is turning on and off is that normal? Thanks for any info I can get.

I have the same machine and am the original owner. All I can tell you is, it does that sometimes. I don't know why and it doesn't seem to effect anything.

I paid $700 for one with the hard case, extension table, knee lift, walking foot, 16 feet, dozens of bobbins, and some other accessories. Love it! I use it less than I planned b/c I have other machines, but I still think I got a great deal and I don't plan to sell it. There's a yahoo group called Berninathirtysomethings about older Berninas incl the 930, and lots of info about them on patternreview.com. This machine is definitely worth having serviced. When I bought mine, it had been serviced very recently, which just sweetened the deal. The gal that sold it to me was SO nice, a QB member. It's very precise and powerful. It has a long basting stitch, I'd keep it just for that. Most of the 930s have needle up/down by tapping the heel of the foot pedal. Mine is a 1983, early model, so it doesn't have this (darn!).

This one came in a cabinet that stretches out a long way and has all of the feet and stuff with it except a walking foot. Will be looking for one but I don't know much about Bernina. Never thought I would ever own one. I love it, it is so smooth.

I purchased a 930 new in 1983. It has the needle up/down when you heal back on the foot pedal. Bernina had a special offer when you bought the machine you got the sewing cabinet free. I have the cabinet as well. It's a nice cabinet. I used my machine hard & the only part ever replaced were the feed dogs. I wore them off I sewed so much!

The 930 makes a sort of clicking sound when starting & stopping. This machine has always been in great demand, as it is one of the last all medal, non-computer, machines made by Bernina. I'ts a workhorse. It's considered a semi-industrial. It will sew thru 3 or 4 layers of saddle leather without blinking! I'd highly suggest you find a Bernina dealer & have it cleaned/serviced. Then keep it well oiled & she'll run like a dream. Also you should only use Bernina oil on this machine, as it's different than Singer or generic oil.

The machine did not come with a walking foot. The foot price for a new one is around $100(or more) from a Bernina dealer. There are generic feet, but I do NOT reccomend them. The original walking foot came with 2 sole plates. A newly designed one, which is just comming out, now comes with 3 sole plates. 1 is for regular sewing, the other 2 are for quilting. The 2nd one (new sole plate) for quilting has a guide for doing stich in the ditch. The new walking foot has been redesigned just a bit so it will work with the new 830 & 830E machine that have duel feed.

There is/was also a foot that cuts the excess fabric off as you did overlock. I have that too.

The machine also came with a nice accessory box. Did you get that too? It also came with a hard case, which is nice for transport.

I had a Bernina 200E (sewing/embroidery)I traded in on the new 830. I then traded it up for the new 830 Limited Edition. I do most of my sewing on the new machine, but prefer to use the 930 for really heavy stuff like jeans, leather, strapping, etc.

Some parts are no longer being made for this machine. One is the electric cord. They are still making them for use in the UK tho, but they have different electic power. However you could use a power converter. You can get a new foot pedal, but it's different than the original one. All parts have to be purchased thru a Bernina dealer. If you find parts on e-bay/etc make sure they are OEM parts & not generic.

Be sure that you get the shank adapter. With that, you can use any low shank foot.

What year did the Bernina 930 add the heal tap for the up/down feature? I read somewhere it is in 1984 and afterward. Just wondering. I know you are supposed to be able to tell by the serial number is an indicator of the year of manufacture by adding 60 to the first two digits of the serial number. Thanks for your help!

I don't have that model but my Bernina has a different sound when turned on, just it's nature.......calla

I have the 930, I bought it new in 86. It is my "best friend". Mine has the needle up and down. Take it in for a "spa day" at your Bernina dealer/service center, and it should take care of what is making the sound.

Would love to know what part that is! I have a Record 930 that I inherited and Love it, but want to start machine quilting as my hands are giving out. I have the low shank ruler foot, but need the adapter for the machine, Or a machine walking foot. Since I have the shank, would prefer the adapter. Any ideas about what it is called so I can find one?
