I'm currently making a simple "Millers daughter" quilt, or "stars through the window" depending on who you are...

and for the first time, my local stores did not have the material I wanted or anything like it. (Here's a photo, I just think the animals are perfect for the window parts...)
It is available from several Online places all for pretty much the same price.
I feel so silly having never ordered fabric on line before, but I was thinking you all may have some good recommendations for better stores, or places to avoid...feel free to share personal experiences.

Love Fabric.com- free shipping when you spend 35.00- very easy to do.
Also great sellers on Ebay. I do a lot of my online shopping there. I make sure they have a good feedback score and now have a few favorites I always go to.

SmickChick 06-18-2011 10:05 AM

I have had good experiences with fabric.com. Whatever site you may choose to use, be sure to first go to RetailMeNot, and see if there are any online coupon codes for the store. With a 30 second search, I saved $13.
The only problem with online shopping is that it can become addictive. No more waiting for poor service. Makes me wish to never step into another crumby service Joannes again!

Fabric Depot is fast and good to work with also. Connecting Threads and Fabric.com:)

Fabric.com BY FAR the best!!!! They sent me a lot of Kona I ordered a couple of weeks ago. Two of the colors had a chunk missing from them about a foot total. I emailed them and the very next day they called to say that they were going to send me 1 1/2 of each color again!!! That my friends is GREAT customer service. I ordered more Kona that same day;) I needed it;)

I really really love it. I tried really hard today to find something to substitute and decided i would just have to break down and get it. FUnny thing is that I don't think the recipient will be quite as charmed as I was by it. I may have to make another quilt out of it as well...

Barb44 06-18-2011 01:40 PM

I have ordered from Bear Paw Quilts and have been pleased with the service. I don't have a link bookmarked. I have found things there I couldn't find elsewhere.

Connecting Threads is good, but they have their own fabric lines.

Since it's a seasonal print... you could just save a few pieces and make a pair of pretty potholders for your kitchen. That gets you a souvenier, at least, and sometimes that's sufficient!

Or you could make a second quilt!

Judymc 06-19-2011 02:38 AM

I love FABRIC SHACK.

provbs 31 06-19-2011 03:11 AM

I spend way to much online shopping for fabric so I have a "few" favorites. Fabric.com is at the top, Over the Rainbow, The Quilted Castled, The Quilted B, Bug Fabric, Tennessee Quilts (pricey but they carry a good selection of Kaffe}, Fabric.com carries Kaffe also at a much better price. Stitches -n-Frames (?) always has a good sale going on Thursday's. I also shop ebay but the shipping eats your lunch. Fabric.com has free shipping on purchases over $35.00. A very nice touch. Oh and the Country Store has excellent prices. Usually under $8.00 a yard. So glad hubby won't see this post.

thenonnielady 06-19-2011 03:11 AM

I have ordered from many different stores on the internet. I have even ordered from ebay. I have been very pleased with all my purchases. Sometimes the color is not accurate on my computer.

KyKaren1949 06-19-2011 03:13 AM

I love to shop at Stitch-N-Frame in Vicksburg, MS. online and also Crafttown in Salem,IN.
Then I use the online search for fabrics when I know what I'm looking for too.

Joan Dickson 06-19-2011 04:31 AM

That is so cute. I want some. I ordered and received quickly some giraffe fabric from a company that charged 4.50 per 1/2, I needed one yard only. They then charged 6.99 for shipping!!!!! Never again.

Linn 06-19-2011 04:54 AM

19angel52 06-19-2011 04:55 AM

and I will echo the outstanding service of Fabric.com.....! Ordered online on a Wednesday - Friday got the package. Have never been disappointed in the fabric or the service!

traumaRN 06-19-2011 05:07 AM

My favorites are:

1. Crowsnest fabrics; an ebay store

2. http://www.thousandsofbolts.com

3. http://www.missouriquiltco.com
Check it every day for the quilter's daily deal!

munchkinmama 06-19-2011 05:21 AM

Love your fabric. I have ordered from several online quilt stores. I have been very pleased with all of my orders. They seem to really want to please you. I was searching for some train material and I ordered from a bunch of different people. All of them were great.

pieces 06-19-2011 05:46 AM

I ordered fabric online for the first time this spring.
I ordered from Ericas, they have a 800 number you can call.
I don't feel comfortable giving out my credit card numer.
The fabric I ordered was quilt store quality, they shipped in a flat
box to keep postage down. I received the fabric promptly.
I like to promote my LQS but one has gone out of business and with the cost of gas was cheaper paying postage than driving.

Judi in Ohio 06-19-2011 05:57 AM

I have a LQS that sells all fabric for $6.99 even batiks. When I shop online I always go to Fabric shack, thousands of bolts, Crows nest on ebay, whittles, those are my go to's. I agree that Fabric.com has wonderful service, but their prices have really gotten high, I can almost always find what I want at a better price.

I'm not real fond of giving out my CC #, so I try to use PayPal when I can.

fivepaws 06-19-2011 06:16 AM

equilter.com is my favorite online. Also use Fabric.com and several others.

katkat1946 06-19-2011 06:27 AM

Oh, my - the list under my favorites tab is sooooo extensive! I've ordered from just about all that others have mentioned and never been displeased. I've found many using the quiltshops.com search that someone already posted. Can add just a few more from my huge list:

Do you have a name for your fabric? I'd like to go to Quiltshops.com and see who carries it.

Thanks!

jaciqltznok 06-19-2011 06:53 AM

the right store will be the one that actually has this fabric...

after that, it will be the one that fabrics in your price range..

asking about the "BEST" online stores is like asking which is the best iron, sewing machines, needles, etc...EVERY reply will based upon the experience of the person giving you the reply! Some LOVE the low end sites like fabric.com, connecting threads, joanns, etc and some LOVE the higher end shops like Hancocks of Paducah, Equilter, etc..

only YOU can know which is right/BEST for you!

Having said that, I have had to shop online for many years...
When I have a special fabric I NEED to find, I always start at quiltshops.com...type in the info from the selvage edge of the fabric I am searching out, and then view the shops that have it...
IF I can not find it there, I go shop by shop starting with stitch-n-frame.net, fabricshack.com, bestkeptsecret.com!

Good luck!

Not sure where in Missouri you live, but I really liked the quilt shop in Hannibal, MO. We visit there a couple times a year and I always make sure I get to stop by.

I go there a couple of times a year too. Lovely shop and great customer service. Plus, my grands live in Hannibal so I love it there.

WebFabrics - www.webfabrics.net. Always really friendly and helpful, carry a great range of basic and blender fabrics, nicely designed website. Packages sometimes reach me in the UK within 3 or 4 days! The only problem I have now is that US postage rates seem to have increased, so the exchange rate has to be favourable to make it worth my while buying from the States now.

QuiltnLady1 06-19-2011 08:37 AM

Most of the fabric stores online great and their service is great.

I know why you are asking, after doing a fair amount of ordering, these are the questions I ask:
-- what is the quality of the fabric I receive
-- how quickly do they process my order
-- do I get a reasonably prompt email confirmation
-- do I get my order in a reasonable amount of time

I made a substantial order from one online company, nothing was listed as being on backorder, and it took a month to get. I was never notified about when the order was shipped, I was charged a lot for shipping. When I called to check on my order because I did not get a reply to my email, no one could tell me what happened to my order. I have never gone back.

mhansen6 06-19-2011 08:40 AM

If I know the name of fabric and the manufacturer I look on QuiltShop.com. They search 200 fabric shops all at once. I have had excellant service whenever I have bought fabric from one of their shops.

I also use Piecework fabrics. They have great sales.

grammysharon 06-19-2011 08:45 AM

I use eQuilter when I am looking for a specific fabric. They seem to have most of what I am looking for
