hi quilters---

will someone tell me what they feel is the best thread to use, if any, when free motion quilting------also, why is my darning foot sooo close to the needle plate, am i doing something wrong?

BellaBoo 03-12-2010 01:57 PM

I use thin thread so my stitches will sink into the fabric.
I like InvisaFil, YLI silk, Glide, and Bottom Line. I don't know what you mean by your foot is too close to the needle plate. Do you have the correct shank size darning foot for your machine?

The size thread depends on your machine and the fabric you are using. But generally whatever you want to use and can use in your machine should be good...depends on if you want it to show or not. I think quilting is part of the design, so I use 50 or heavier thread to do the quilting with, too.

I use Connecting Threads thread and it works fine for me. I'm not sure what you are asking about your darning foot.

i use anything i want to quilt with, whatever my machines likes! i have used it all from verigated, to bottomline, gutterman, connecting threads, superior, aurifil, sulkys, even metallics and clear.
connecting threads has great prices for the cones..

i am not sure about your FMQ foot either..take a picture or explain it differently..and we can help you..

regarding your darning foot... what kind of machine do you have? I have a Pfaff and when I use the darning foot, I don't lower it as far down as I would using the regular feet. There is a little notch part way for the presser foot lever to sit on when using the darning foot so it sits higher.

Maybe that's your problem.

As for thread I use 100% cotton usually Gutterman, YLI silk or YLI monofilament.

bottom line is good

Those of you who use YLI silk, do you put it in the bobbin as well? If not, what do you put there? I love the silk for hand applique. Thanks!

on my darning foot it has a screw above the spring, you can tighten or loosen it , it will raise or lower the foot piece, I had to do that today, it was too close to the plate and was causing the fabric to not move freely. I hope this helps

There may be a knob or dial on your machine that lessens the pressure of the presser foot.
