Bias stems
 

I am making a quilt right now with bias tape for stems. I am making my own tape to be 1/4". Last time when I used this technique I quilted both sides of the tape down to the quilt using one of my applique stitches.

I was wondering if this is the best way to stitch the stems to the quilt top or is there a better?

I just watched Fon's and Porter show where they did flower stems and used a blanket stitch. the stems were skinny so their stitch must not have been very wide or long, but it looked good. they folded their stem,pressed, opened and laid it on the marking of the block and stitched in the center fold area. folded it over and then went around and stitched both sides down and the leaves with the blanket stitch. the quilt had blue poseys (flowers).

I admire quilters that can hand applique narrow bias. I tried appliqueing thin bias strips and it looked liked I hemmed the strips down. I decided to use a twin needle and stitch both sides at one time. I cheated even more buy using pre made, fusible 1/4" binding.

the Fon's and Porter show was Bluebonnet Baby quilt, not Posey.

I have done both a simple stitch on both sides of fairly narrow stems as well as a narrow blanket stitch. Both help the center of the stem appear rounded (I think).
